A critical note on Lawson Wood’s humorous monkey paintings featured by Wood for a magazine. The cartoon shows a monkey with side whiskers lassoing a rabbit while using a banana pistol, provoking amused chaos and high praise for the artist’s wit.
Boone High School reports 266 pupils enrolled after the first week of the current session. Eighth graders number 61, with 15 transferring from other high schools into the ninth to twelfth grades, and the rest returning from last year. Enrollment shows a 33 pupil drop from last year at the same point. Principal Guy H. Hill cites fewer Boone elementary transfers as a reason. The faculty includes Grace Graybeal Annie Ruth German Laurie Stewart Lucille Allred Thelma Wilson Louise Robles E S Christensenbury Charles Farthing Claude Pyatte Compton Crook and Guy H Mill. The Board aims to raise standards while cutting costs, ordering only 24 new textbooks and mimeographing forms to save about 85 dollars. They cut supplies to the essentials yet maintain an efficient program. Principal Hill emphasizes trained technicians for the demonstration school and notes teachers from Appalachian State Teachers College will be prepared by training and experience.
Mrs Richard Holler age 56 died at her Blowing Rock home after a stroke of paralysis began the prior Sunday. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Church near Boone with burial at Hines graveyard. Surviving are her husband and nine children. She was formerly Nettie Hayes daughter of George W Hayes of Boone and a longtime Sandy Flat Baptist Church member.
Senator Bob Reynolds of North Carolina sails from New York to observe Soviet practice in Leningrad Moscow and Odessa and then visit Denmark Sweden and Norway to study liquor control. He plans to return October 31 and join the repeal campaign in North Carolina for the November 7 election. He is accompanied by Mrs Reynolds.
R S Swift chairman of the Watauga County Board of Elections lists judges for the November 7 1933 prohibition election with repealists named first in each precinct. Registration books open October 28, challenge day November 4 and absentee voting is prohibited. No repeal delegate named yet and petitions due by October 7.
Watauga County resident Jarvis Greene was paroled after executive clemency from the Governor following recommendations from the trial judge and solicitor. He must stay of good behavior, seek gainful employment, and report to the Superintendent of Public Welfare.
Ashe County lawyer and legislator C Bowie spoke to a large audience in Watauga County about the burden of state and local taxes. He argued no further bonded indebtedness, called for tax relief within taxpayers means, and urged electing lawmakers who will cut state and school expenses. He claimed one sixth of people bear the full load and suggested families should pay about six thousand dollars annually.
Willard Church and Allen Blackburn were arraigned in Recorders Court on charges tied to injuries of Miss Geneva Ray of Todd after being struck by an automobile on the highway near her home. Ray remains in serious condition. Bond set at 1200 dollars. Spencer Blackburn, brother of one defendant, jailed on federal prohibition charges awaiting arrival of officers. Cline Church convicted of stealing a washtub and washboard and appealing to Superior Court. also charged with rooster larceny, with judgment held. Mrs Floyd Palmer visited friends in Charlotte.
As Maine votes repeal, Colorado Maryland and Minnesota post strong anti prohibition majorities. Nationally 29 states have ratified the repeal. 36 needed. Maryland shows overwhelming opposition with Baltimore 11 to 1, Western Maryland 4 to 1, eastern shore 2 to 1. Other early returns include Denver 6 to 1 repeal. Idaho and New Mexico vote next Tuesday. Virginians vote October 3.
A Boone National Recovery Administration committee, chaired by J. F. Moore with Gordon Winkler as secretary, plans an intensive town wide campaign. Executive members include W. R. Lovill M. B. Craven and T. E. Bingham. Special committees will survey each business and urge cooperation with the NRA program and consumer pledge.
Funeral services for Edward G. Minton 65 a native of the community were held Friday afternoon at the Baptist Church. Rev E C Hodges presided and burial followed. Survived by widow a daughter Mrs N B McCandler Mount Pleasant NC a sister Mrs Joe Hartley Hickory three brothers Newton Vilas Julius Hickory Avery Hickory and other relatives. Minton longtime resident of Mt Pleasant and native of Watauga County.
Rev Leicester F. Kent, rector of Valle Crucis School for Girls, accepts a call to Trinity Church in Shepherdstown West Virginia and will begin in October. He will also serve as priest in charge at Harper's Ferry. The Valle Crucis School, though facing funding cuts, is debt free and prepared for the new year after four years of Kent's leadership. Prior to Valle Crucis he was Yukon archdeacon, touring Alaska by dogs and sleigh.
L. E. Norman, 50, postmaster at Elk Park, died in Grace Hospital Banner Elk after several days of illness from a cerebral hemorrhage. He served Elk Park as postmaster for twelve years and had just been reappointed for a new three year term. Final rites were held Sunday at 10 a.m. at Elk Park Methodist Church with Rev. E. C. Price officiating and Masons conducting ceremonies at the cemetery.
