A couple in patched garments spend a quiet Saturday in town. They buy candy watermelons bananas and oranges, note lurid posters, and savor a shared snack before returning to their cottage in the hills to tend the children cows and chickens.
The piece extols Mrs. Watt Gragg's garden on North Water street, inviting readers to walk a shady bridge to behold thousands of blossoms including dahlias gladiolus and asters. It promises indescribable beauty amid rocks and logs and stirs universal praise from all who view it.
A local recipe for light yeast rolls is shared from a neighbor and includes 1 yeast cake 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup warm water 2 tablespoons melted lard 1 teaspoon salt. The method coats, rises, shapes, and bakes rolls until golden with butter, yielding a nostalgic kitchen favorite.
Hon T C Bowie member of the General Assembly and advocate of the three per cent sales tax will address Watauga County citizens at a mass meeting in the county court house Friday at 8 PM. C W Teal of the Fair Tax Association emphasizes the gathering is open to all voters and not merchants. Bowie, an influential opponent in the legislature, is seen as a possible gubernatorial candidate.
Funeral services for Roy Williams of Poplar Grove were held at the Baptist Church with Rev. R. C. Eggers and Rev. W. C. Payne officiating. Interment followed in the family graveyard. Williams, 45, died after a weeklong illness. he was a farmer and carpenter. Surviving are his widow Connie Hayes, three daughters Pauline Ora Lee Beatrice, two sons Clyde and Roy Jr., his mother Mrs. Susan Williams, three sisters and two brothers, all of the county.
Blowing Rock School will open Monday September 18 due to work on the building. Principal Grady Tester asks parents to start children on opening day as local golf courses and many hotels where students work close by the 18th. A. D. Robertson notes Crotalaria is growing as a summer legume in Richmond County peach orchards.
Freshman football at Appalachian State Teachers College under Coach Garbee aims to sustain Johnson era success. Varsity starts Sept 23 at Erskine. schedule includes Milligan, Glenville State, Western Carolina Teachers, Piedmont, King, Concord, Tusculum, and Eastern Carolina Teachers games. Open date noted. High School practice also begins with Boone schedule listed.
George P. Sherrill, 83, prominent Beaver Dam citizen, died at home after years of frailty. Funeral at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with Rev. R. C. Eggers and Rev. Wellington Swift assisting. Interment in nearby cemetery. Survived by widow and four children including John Sherrill of Knoxville and Clemson College president George Sherrill. He was a longtime churchman and public servant.
Mrs Dick Holler of Blowing Rock suffered a stroke at her home last Sunday morning and has not rallied. She is paralyzed and speechless with grave fears she may not survive based on the doctor’s statement.
W. R. Spainhour aged 88 longtime Confederate veteran and last Lee Jackson follower in the community died Friday from a heart ailment at his home. The Boone Baptist Church held services with Rev. P. A. Hicks and Rev. J. H. Brendall. Survivors include his widow and two children, Mrs. W. F. Miller of Boone and Mrs. C. C. Powell of Wilson, N C.
A large countywide audience at the courthouse auditorium heard Hon. W. C. Newland and Prof. I. G. Greer advocate for the United Dry Forces. They urged a majority against the Eighteenth Amendment repeal and supported Valle Crucis merchant W. W. Mast as dry delegate candidate for the December constitutional convention.
Cutting of cabbage for Watauga Sauer Kraut has begun at the North State Canning Company plant. W. F. Miller says the annual pack may be similar to previous years. Twelve workers cut cabbage and fill large stave vats for kraut and kraut juice. Wagons deliver cabbage as slicing machines operate. a brief halt occurred when bins filled. Mrs. Blownie Clay of Charleston has bought the Luther South property in Buena Vista and plans to move next spring.
Ira Dugger a 26 year old electrician with the J. M. Dearmin Coal and Ice Company Elk Park Avery County was electrocuted at 9 Saturday morning while packing a pump in a water filled pit at the ice plant. He touched a 220 volt light wire with his left hand alone at the scene. Funeral at 2 Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev Roy Wilson. Survived by widow two children his parents Mr and Mrs Henry Dugger two brothers Milton and Gurney and two sisters Mrs Delsie Shell and Mrs Reece Winters.
Appalachian State Teachers College reports 768 fall enrollments and strong freshman numbers with four hundred freshmen and nearly three hundred second-year students. Boone High School opens with pending registration figures as Dr. Guy Hill continues as principal and a complete faculty list to follow. Demonstration School shows steady progress with steady primary enrollments.
The local American Legion secured two large field guns from the War Department to decorate the courthouse lawn. Guns are at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, ready for shipment to Boone but funds are needed. Donations may be given to listed local coordinators or left at The Democrat office.

Upchurch former Anti-Saloon League superintendent campaigns for United Dry Forces of North Carolina will speak at Mount Vernon Baptist Church Monday September 11 at 8 oclock and at South Fork Baptist Church the next Tuesday at 8 oclock Clyde R Greene local art leader reports the engagements
Watauga League All-Stars rode Bill Lentz seven strong innings to a 6 to 0 win over Wilkes League All-Stars at the fairgrounds. Lentz allowed only three hits as Wilkes managed lone singles from Johnnie Osborne and Jimmie Henderson. Bumgarner started for Wilkes, giving up four runs in five innings. Coy Billings followed with two hits allowed through the ninth.
