A. J. Dean 42 a Shulls Mills resident died in a Charlotte hospital after a major operation. Survived by widow Elsie Garland and two daughters Rita and Mildred. Native of Avery County, longtime farmer and church member, funeral held at Shulls Mills Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Shores officiating.
Federal Judge for the Middle North Carolina district will speak in Creston next Sunday at 2 30 p m on the dry forces. The event is sponsored by the United Dry Forces of Ashe County with Rev R H Stone urging a large turnout to hear the noted jurist discuss the issue.
Mr. Ernest Billings of the Watauga River reports a double bass catch while fishing with a live minnow. A small black bass struck the lure and, after pulling the hook, a second fish of similar size was snagged under the gill and caught on the line. Both fish were released.
An all Negro cast will stage Heaven Bound at Boone Methodist Church on Saturday September 9 with 3 PM and 8 PM showings. Tickets go on sale via the Woman's Missionary Society and at the parsonage day of show. a space is reserved for colored residents to attend.
Boone City public schools begin the 1933-34 term at 8:30 a.m. with over seven hundred students expected. Principal Guy Hill notes enrollment likely to rise due to federal child labor laws. Budget cuts will reflect the times but service remains steady as changes refresh both elementary and high school faculties and facilities. Students may enroll Friday and Saturday, September 1 and 2, to avoid opening day delays. The high school student council plans to assist freshmen and the book depository will help with book exchanges on opening day.
A handsome new Baptist church at Balm Avery County will be dedicated next Sunday with a 10 o'clock ceremony. Rev Roy Painter will give the welcome, M K Carswell will recount church history, I G Greer area Home superintendent will speak, and Rev P A Hicks of Boone Baptist Church will deliver an address. The brick structure, completed two months ago, is modern and reflects local Baptist fidelity.
Hon. T. C. Bowie of West Jefferson, who led the revolt against the 3 per cent general sales tax, has been asked to address a meeting of the local Fair Tax Association at the courthouse Friday evening. Officials urge a large turnout as the organization completes its county setup whether Bowie accepts or not.
Wa tauga Baseball League president Co W Teal asks all listed players to report in Boone August 31 at 12 30 for an all star game against Wilkes County pickers in North Wilkesboro. A return game is set for September 7 at 2 30 on the college grounds.
Mrs B L Sparks died in Ashland Kentucky last week after an operation officials say. She was well known in Boone where she and her husband lived last winter. She was aunt of Mrs A B Cole. Tobacco farmers in Craven and Granville counties organize county associations to bargain for better prices this fall.
J Paul Leonard of the NC Fair Tax Association spoke as a local unit formed at the courthouse Friday night. W F Sherwood elected county chairman C W Teal vice chair Robert C Rivers Jr secretary. The group of Watauga citizens denounced the 3 percent sales tax and aims to abolish taxes.
Governor W C Newland of Le noir and Professor I G Greer will headline a county wide dry rally at the court house next Sunday at 2 30. Judge Hayes could not attend due to conflicts. The event marks the start of North Carolina's campaign against repealing the 18th Amendment and draws crowds from across Watauga County. Local United Dry Forces units are forming with 25 to 50 leaders in each township.
Law officers from Watauga and Alexander counties pursue B. C. Green and son Lester Green after a Taylorsville bank robbery. A deputy sheriff was wounded and a Cline youth was injured when the Green pair fired on a pursuing car. A $500 reward remains. fugitives sought dead or alive through Avery and Linville area.
At Appalachian State Teachers College summer commencement 83 degrees were conferred by Governor W C Newland. Sixteen men and twenty five women received teacher certificates and degrees in fields including Primary Education Biology Chemistry English Geography History French Physics and more. Three generations of Dotsons shared in the senior class as Rev Roy Dotson his son Hight and daughter Ola Dotson Farr earned bachelor of science degrees.
Cove Creek High School will open its fall session Monday morning September 4. Parents should enroll their children on opening day. No changes in high school texts. five year adoption continues. Geog texts for 4th and 6th grades are newly adopted. Textbooks available from James B Mast W W Mast and Miss Jennie Coffey. High school texts secured by the principal. A faculty meeting is scheduled for Saturday afternoon September 2 at 2. Principal Sam F Horton invites public visitation.
Cora Grimes colored 45 years old wife of John Grimes died at her Boone home after a week of illness. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church with Rev. Ronda Horton officiating and burial in the community cemetery. She was born in the community and was well regarded by white residents. She is survived by her husband and thirteen children including an infant. sixteen of her seventeen children had died.

Constable Fred Hatley seized two gallons of whiskey from an automobile occupied by John Church and Raymond Campbell in Shulls Mills. The pair were jailed Wednesday after initial pursuit and news of an arrest warrant in another matter surfaced during the liquor discovery.
