Josephus Daniels editor of the News and Observer and former Navy secretary spoke to a large Watauga gathering in the courthouse last Thursday afternoon. He urged a Democratic victory, cited unmet Hoover promises, praised North Carolina education gains, and lauded the Democratic party while declining to attack the President personally. Daniels was introduced by George M. Sudderch and traveled to Boone from Jefferson with W. B. Austin.

Congressman Robert L. Doughton will deliver his third campaign address in Watauga County at the Green Valley school house Keat Camp Township on Thursday November 3 at 7 30 in the evening. A large crowd is expected as he was unable to appear in Meat Camp last campaign. Attorney General Dennis G Krummitt had his Boone address for Wednesday canceled but a notable speaker is hoped to close the local campaign next week. A Hall Johnson presidential elector at large will speak at Blowing Rock Thursday at 3 o clock.

Tony Sherrill Dies at Portsmouth After Police Career
Tony Sherrill of Lenoir, former Caldwell County sheriff from 1922 to 1928 and longtime police chief, died early Tuesday at the U S Naval Hospital in Portsmouth Virginia where he had been a patient since mid August. He collapsed while on duty August 12 and was later admitted to the Portsmouth hospital. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church in Lenoir at 8 o'clock Thursday afternoon with interment in Beaverview Cemetery.

Mr G P Hagaman appointed by the Three Forks Association as director of the Mills Home has received a request from I G Greer manager of the Baptist Orphanage for food donations. A truck from the home will be in Boone on November 4 to receive produce potatoes corn apples and canned goods. Donors should bring food to Boone to be stored in the Baptist Church basement until transported to Thon asville.

Al Hopkins Dies in Washington Hospital after Wreck
Alfred Hopkins, longtime Wa taugan figure and organizer of the Hill Billies troupe, died in a Washington hospital on October 21 from injuries in a West Virginia automobile wreck. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery. He served in World War I and led a popular mountain music group with ties to Watauga region. Survivors include his parents, four brothers, two sisters, all in Washington, and an aunt in Boone.

Elliott Daingerfield 78 renowned landscape and religious painter died Saturday in New York from a heart attack. Funeral was held Tuesday at St Mary the Virgin Church in New York and interment followed at Cross Creek Cemetery Fayetteville. Survived by widow and two daughters, Oliver Wendell Holmes III’s wife and Gwendolyn Daingerfield. Known Blowing Rock resident since 1885 with a long summer estate heritage in the Carolina hills.
