Mrs. R. C. Rhea of Shouns, widow of Dr. R. C. Rhea, died last Thursday night at her home. She was 86, longtime Johnson County physician’s widow, and a Salem College alumna who lived through Civil War era life and Reconstruction. Funeral held Saturday at Shouns Methodist Church with burial in the local cemetery. survivors include several sons and daughters and many grandchildren.
The final PTA gathering, presided by Mrs. Clay, elected Mrs. David Greene as president and Miss Eula Todd with Mr. D. P. Mast as vice presidents. Linney and Hartzog were re elected secretary and treasurer as the second grade under Miss Bouchelle showcased a prize winning program and the group awarded a flag loaned by the American Legion.

In a Madison Square Garden address, Pritchard critiques a struggle between Jeffersonian Democrats and the Tammany wing. He warns Uncle John Jacob Raskob seeks to repeal prohibition and vows to uphold the 18th Amendment if elected to the U S Senate on November 4th. The speech drew strong applause.
Early Monday morning a fire razed the Hodges residence on Blowing Rock Road. The two year old brick structure was declared a total loss with about $13,000 in damage, partially insured. Fire officials noted the cause may be an electrical wiring defect. Only a bedstead was recovered from the flames.
Industrial Commissioner J Dewey Dorsett on a Western North Carolina trip will hear Garfield Guy versus Whiting Lumber Company in the Clerk of Superior Court office Boone this Wednesday afternoon. He will address Penalty assessment for failure to insure employees under the workmen compensation act. Mr and Mrs Joe Winkler returned from Raleigh where they attended the State Fair, visiting with their daughter Mrs Ernest Moore and Mr Moore over the weekend.
A J Campbell 62, longtime Mabel resident and pioneer of moving pictures in western North Carolina, died at home on the 13th after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted at Union Church by Rev. R C Eggers with burial in the local cemetery. Survived by a widow and children Will Spencer Dick Mack and Pearl all prominent in the county.
Saturday is the final day to register for the November 4 general election. Boone Township registrar A D Wilson and all county precinct registrars will keep the books open here. Unregistered residents must file by sunset Saturday or lose voting rights. transfers required if moving between townships.
Dean Presnell, 13 months old, son of Mr and Mrs Willard Presnell of Vilas, died at Grace Hospital Banner Elk from burns after reportedly falling into a tub of boiling molasses during syrup making last Wednesday night. He was rushed to the hospital but died from the injuries.
Mrs. Joe K. Mast of Valle Crucis sent the Democrat a box of delicate dahlias and large strawberries, proving the valley’s climate preserves blooms and fruit after early frosts. Watauga producer salesman W. B. Flewellen of Charlotte spent weeks in Boone buying beans, cabbage and potatoes totaling 8 107 85, signaling a favorable season and plans to brand Watauga produce.
A correction notes J. Frank Moore led Boone Civitan during the crucial founding year. He toured businesses to recruit members and renew ties, establishing the club on a sound footing. Later presidents Dr. Moore G P Hagaman and Russell G Hodges continued strong civic work in Boone and Watauga County.
Official tabulations show 1300 men women and children enrolled in Boone colleges and schools 654 in State Teachers College 285 in the high school 862 in the graded school demonstration. Early next year 75 to 100 more may join the college body. Boone now ranks as Western North Carolina’s educational hub.
Mr. George Hayes of one mile southwest of the city sent a squash specimen to The Democrat measuring four feet eleven inches in length with a stem end diameter of three inches to five inches at the widest. Seeds were secured in Pennsylvania and a cash prize awaits the largest specimen upon acceptable naming. Hayes may establish his claim to the largest vegetable, while the naming contest awaits a suitable moniker.
The Tuberculosis Clinic for Watauga county school children, run by the State Sanatorium Extension Department and supported by Civitan clubs, wrapped up October 20 with 111 children undergoing X rays after 122 skin tests. Doctors from the sanatorium performed the tests and imaging, with results to be reviewed by Dr. McCain and shared with parents. The effort showed a low tuberculosis rate in the county and praised teachers, hospitals, and volunteers for a successful survey and care, including adults who benefited and outreach to parents.
Mrs. Councill W Boyden, wife of Dr. Boyden of China Grove, hanged herself in the bathroom of the Boyden home Sunday midnight. A note to her mother said she could not go on. She had previously attempted suicide twice, by poison and by hanging, but was saved on both occasions.
