Commissioner William A. Graham urges North Carolina to prioritize home production before exporting to other regions. He calls for expanding corn oats soybeans and peas, increasing hay, and feeding livestock with home grown crops while keeping more potatoes at home to lessen debt and diversify farming.
W. C. Wilkinson of Charlotte, highway commissioner for the sixth district, says state gasoline and license tax revenues will exceed current needs by over a million dollars this year. He notes cumulative construction costs, bond payments starting in 1929, and a coming period of slower road building with ongoing work.
Colonel Charles Lindbergh was greeted by an estimated 25,000 spectators at Hanes Park in Winston-Salem last Friday. He arrived from Greensboro at 2 PM and prepared to depart in the afternoon for Richmond, Virginia.
Odell Benfield has been confined to his room for the past two weeks due to rheumatism, with no improvement reported.
The Barendrecht rescued Miss Elder and George W. Haldeman after a downed airplane near Azores. The crew sent a boat, saved the aviators with lines, but explosions set the plane on fire. They reached Horta, Azores, where Miss Elder sent telegraphs home.
Gilmers Inc the city's largest department store burned today in Winston-Salem with an estimated loss of 225000. Flames were spotted around 8 am and under control before noon as they threatened downtown businesses. Origin of the fire remains unknown. In Salisbury the North Carolina Sunday School Association dates set for April 10 to 12 in Concord.
Mr and Mrs Rupert Gillette of Blowing Rock announce the birth of a son at Longs Sanatorium in Statesville last Friday.
The Watauga Red Cross chapter will hold its annual meeting Monday evening October 24 at the Daniel Boone Hotel. R C Rivers issued the invitation urging many citizens to attend to discuss plans for the Roll Call November 11 to 25 aiming to recruit at least 100 members for the local chapter.
Blowing Rock reports the season’s first snow driven by strong winds, melting by day and dropping with night temperatures. The Blowing Rock Dramatic Club announces the cast for Misery Moon to run early November with music by the Blowing Rock Band. A winter hotel plan includes the Martin Cottage and Central Hotel remaining open through the season.
Valle Crucis reports the Women's Missionary Society resumes after summer with good turnout at Mrs. T. H. Taylor's home. Mrs. B. G. Leake sails for Manila via Chicago October 25 to be away three years. A group including Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Taylor visits relatives in Lenoir and Concord. Rev. Thos. L. Trott conducts services at Holy Cross church. Miss Carrie Gudheim returns to Valle Crucis School for Girls faculty. J. L. Tester suffers a relapse. The Woman's Auxiliary hosts an afternoon gathering at the school led by Miss Graves.
Revival services at the Baptist and Methodist churches under Revs Campbell and Parker will likely close Friday evening unless new notices arise. Large congregations welcomed the gospel messages and many have professed faith with several already joining. Ministers visited Normal school periodically during the meeting.
Rev. Thomas L. Trott departed Sunday for Valle Crucis to lead a series of Episcopal services through October 23. He is the guest of Rev. James Preston Burke of the Valle Crucis School.
County Superintendent Hagaman found two old school vouchers dating 1884 in the office stack. One pays Miss Nannie J. Rivers forty nine dollars for teaching at Meat Camp for two and a half months, approved by J. C. Miller and others. The second voucher pays John S. Johnson forty one dollars sixty cents for two and five ninths months of teaching, signed by Hugh Hagaman and I. W. Storie.
Matney born to James and Mrs Baird a son. Mr and Mrs George Cook of Boone visited J B Matney this weekend. Laura Carender returns home after two weeks in Grace Hospital Banner Elk. Matney school improves in attendance and tardies. three gold medals to be awarded for top all around student and best reading or declamation. 21 enrolled. Baptist revival ends with five new members.
The 35th district will hold a three day school of instruction for Masons starting Tuesday October 25 and running through Thursday October 27. Dr W C Wicker will lead lectures on Masonic education ritualistic work at the Masonic lodge over Boone Hardware. Each lodge should attend at least one meeting. Sessions run 7 30 to 10 p m Monday and 2 to 6 and 7 30 to 10 p m Wednesday and Thursday.
Citizens in Boone and Watauga discuss extending the Bristol Gas and Electric 44 000 volt line from Butler, Tennessee to Elk Park and Newland with potential reach to Boone. Civitan Club and Boone Chamber of Commerce seek a detailed plan from Charles E Ide of the Tennessee corporation. If approved, unlimited power supply to local consumers could lower rates.
Miss Ann Wright arrives in Boone to lead a county wide campaign against rats. She claims to be one of only two female rat killers worldwide and will visit every store and business house with barium carbonate, a US Public Health Service endorsed poison, during the campaign.
A Normal report shows 58 North Carolina counties represented at the Appalachian Normal this fall with Watauga leading at 24 students and Iredell 27. Other states include Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Maryland. total students come from 12 counties.
By Wednesday morning the Watauga Kraut Factory had received 75 tons of cabbage, with 60 tons cut and in tanks. The plant holds 240 tons capacity, and manager H Neal Blair expects insufficient supply to fill all tanks due to late crop and outflows. Blair will buy remaining cabbage this week and next as long as supply lasts, paying 75 cents per hundred.
