State bank examiners W L Williams and M L Harrison conducted the annual review of Watauga County Bank on Monday and Tuesday. Laws tightening bank regulation prompt strict obedience. the bank shows assets exceeding $750,000 and is reported in fine condition in The Democrat.
Rocky Mount October 25 State Commissioner of Revenue R A Coughton told business leaders the growing highway wreck toll is North Carolina s top problem since July 1 there were 691 wrecks 148 killed and 1170 injured He said the solution is unclear but business men must study state problems and help solve them The future of the state rests with them
In Jefferson on October 24 Judge N A Sinclair told Ashe county citizens to defend their homes with guns if masked men enter. He denounced anonymous threats and said cowardice hides behind such letters, criticizing groups claiming Ku Klux Klan ties.
In Hickory on Oct 25 officers searched a depot after arresting Guy Cook of Blowing Rock on drunkenness. They found sixteen pants and twelve coats in bundles, and a pint bottle of whiskey. Cook denied ownership and refused to give his name.
Rev Willis T Jordan former Columbus Georgia minister convicted of bigamy in Mecklenburg County Superior Court Charlotte began an 18 month sentence in the state prison Raleigh. He was brought from Charlotte by deputy sheriffs and placed in his cell for the night as reporters sought interviews.
A meeting of the Watauga Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy is set for Thursday at 3 30 in the Appalachian State Normal School Administration building with Miss Lily Dale presiding. Eligible women are invited to join. General Motors reports nine month net income of 193 757 302, a new record outranking United States Steel.
A group from Blowing Rock visited Statesville for a weekend with Dr. Long's sanitarium. Reports note births, hospital visits, road improvements, and school project updates including the new Blowing Rock consolidated school building nearing completion.
The Johnson City Chronicle reports the main contract for the second $3.5 million unit of American Bemberg Corporation at Elizabethton Tennessee has been awarded. Estimated construction spend is about $1.5 million excluding structural steel for which Virginia Iron and Steel Company was contracted, and a filtering plant on the Watauga River was also let.
Pitt Holtzclaw found guilty of second degree murder in the killing of Robert Burleson and wounding Ida Burleson’s family in McDowell County. The state’s key witness was 10-year-old Cora Burleson, who testified she saw Holtzclaw in the room as Burleson was shot after a lamp was lit in the dark room. Ida Burleson was acquitted.
District Attorney F. A. Linney lauded Governor McLean for appointing Judge John H. Harwood to the superior court. Linney praised Harwood’s businesslike conduct during the Avery county term in Newland and forecast him as one of the state’s ablest judges.
The Democrat announces a fifth Sunday meeting at Middle Cane Church Stony Fork Baptist Association starting Saturday September 29 at 2 p m and continuing through Sunday All denominations are invited to attend Organization will be perfected and the program announced at the Saturday session.
County Superintendent Hagaman bought a bus in Conover for transporting students to and from Blowing Rock consolidated school. The bus, purchased through Boone Chevrolet Company, was put into operation on Tuesday.
Community notes from Matney and Sugar Grove report a pie supper at Matney school on October 29 at 7 30 p m with refreshments and invitations to attend. Miss Laura Carender left for Lees McRae Institute in Banner Elk to resume studies. Local revival begins the first Sunday in November at the Northern Methodist church. A Sunday prayer meeting drew a large crowd at Jim Baird’s home.
Rev. G. W. Sebastain held services Saturday and Sunday with plans for three services on November 12. County Superintendent Hagaman visited a local school last week. Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Heffner and family visited Fred Winkler. Residents attend the Shulls Mills revival led by Revs. Bradshaw and Cook. Poplar Grove School hosts Halloween Excellson October 31 at 7 pm with free admission and sale of refreshments to benefit the school.
Reports on 1927 real and personal valuations from 31 North Carolina counties show eighteen with increased values led by Forsyth at 19.9 million and thirteen with reductions led by Pitt at 2.18 million. Most counties lowered school tax rates due to higher state aid and a larger equalization fund.
Mrs Nan Johnson 65 of Sherwood died at Watauga Hospital after an appendicitis operation. Funeral from home followed by services by Rev L A Hurst. burial at Cove Creek Baptist cemetery. Survived by daughters Mrs Charles Lewis Boone and Arthur Johnson Cove Creek, brother Sam E Day Neva Tenn.
Mr Frank Brown aged 71 prominent citizen of Meat Camp died at his home Monday after months of declining health. His son Mr Frank Greene also died about the same time after a lingering illness with tuberculosis. Both were buried in Brown cemetery Tuesday conducted by Revs Ed Hodges and Watts. Brown reared a large family including Poly Wyke of Boone and Conley and Wilby Brown. Mrs Brown survives.
George L Story 72 of Browning Rock R F C died at home Sunday after a lengthy illness. A longtime county merchant and farmer he left a legacy of charity. He is survived by his widow four sons and three daughters. funeral held Monday with many relatives and friends attending.
Revs. R C Campbell and R J Parker were guests at dinner with the Normal School faculty after recent meetings in Baptist and Methodist churches. The Methodist class presented a purse to Parker, Campbell received honors from the Rutherford county club, and a program followed at Sovill Home with Parker singing in Spanish and reading from John 14. Campbell delivered an address and others spoke briefly.
Luke W. Duffey a Republican state senator and his wife deed 176 acres between Knox and Winamac to Calvin Coolidge as trustee for Andrew Mellon James Reed Simon D Fess Julian Barnes William Jardine Herbert Hoover Pat Harrison and Finis Garrett as tenants in common with a reversion to Indiana upon enactment of a federal farm policy. The deed is recorded.
County Superintendent Smith Hagaman receives a letter from Dr. Zebulon V. Sherrill of Marion Virginia a former Watauga County resident recounting teaching in the area in 1877 to 1878. He recalls vouchers wages for six weeks at six dollars plus twenty five dollars, boarding with scholars and a tale of first boots and old Beadvine stores.
Berea Ky Oct 25 Special The friends and neighbors of Thos Farthing of Watauga Falls NC will be pleased to learn he begins the year at Berea College as corresponding secretary of the Tau Kappa Alpha Society. The group admits proficient public speakers and Farthing has qualified through his great interest in public speaking.
Thieves entered the Boone Trail cafe after midnight Thursday by forcing the front door. They took cigars cigarettes and candy valued at about ten dollars, but left no money. No arrests have been made and no leads have been found.
