Motorcade To Winston-Salem Promotes Route 60 Plan

A Boone Civitan motorcade of 40 to 50 citizens traveled to Winston-Salem on Friday October 7 to meet Highway Commissioner Alex Hanes. The visit urged finishing Route 60 from North Wilkesboro to the Tennessee line and announced early work on Route 69 toward Cranberry. Delegations from North Wilkesboro and Mountain City attended, praising regional cooperation and hospitality.

Roads spending in 7th District Sept totals near 200000

The Winston-Salem Journal reports nearly 200000 spent on seventh highway district projects in September under District Engineer Charles S Currier. Wilkes County led with three projects costing 8618.44 3255.28 and 17451.67. Forsyth County saw 29894 on Route 77 toward the Stokes line. Watauga Caldwell and other Wilkes routes also funded.

No Hope For No. 60 Says Hanes

Winston-Salem conference with Alex S. Hanes of the state highway commission from the seventh district urged hard surfacing of highway 60 to the Watauga capital but funds are unavailable. Ward Dairy Barn Destroyed by Fire Near Boone

A large dairy barn owned by F C Ward on Brushy Fork west of Boone and its milk house, silos, and equipment were destroyed by a blaze of unknown origin. Loss is estimated around 17000 dollars. A car reportedly stopped nearby around midnight and occupants sought gasoline, possibly igniting the fire with matches. Ward had moved some stock to Elizabethton Tenn, and no cows remained in the barn at the time. Insurance partially covered the property.

Mountain City Man Dead After Car Overturns

News reached Boone of the death of Mr. Jeter Love of Mountain City who was killed Tuesday night when the car he rode in overturned near the home of Mr. Dick Butler. Driver David Slemp escaped with minor injuries. Love was a son of Mr. William Love and cousin of Boone’s Chief of Police Garland. Cause of the accident not available.

County Bonds Sold For Good Price

The best bond sale in Watauga County history saw N S & Company of Cincinnati purchase a $28 000 funding and a $12 000 road bonds issue for 40385 85 with a 5 percent interest rate. The sale, with a 385 85 premium, retires in nine years and compares favorably to existing long term bonds. Blowing Rock school expands adding teacher and grades

Blowing Rock consolidated school nears capacity prompting hire of an additional elementary teacher and consideration of new quarters for primary grades. Brickwork on the new building continues with plans to ready some rooms in two months as sidewalks are poured along Main and Boone streets. A revival at the Baptist church under Rev. P. A. Black men held on Charlotte auto theft charge in North Carolina

Willis Smith and Jonas Taylor two Black residents of Charlotte were jailed in Mecklenburg after being linked to the theft of an automobile. The vehicle was found abandoned near Meat Camp Baptist church and officers recovered electrical equipment valued at about 200 dollars. Authorities planned to pursue charges in Mecklenburg County after warrants issued in Charlotte.
