Rumors allege a constable visited the home of an alleged offender to search the premises. Two female relatives reportedly used a broom and other unnamed items to push the officer away. Also circulating are claims Judge Luddreth ordered the women to pay costs and refrain from mistreating officers.

Jackson McBride a respected Mast settlement resident died at his home last Friday after about a year long illness. He was 82 and funeral services were held Saturday with interment in the family graveyard. Survived by no immediate family, his kin is a first cousin. A farmer and successful businessman, he also kept bees and built the first roller mill in the area. He was described as honest, industrious and a benefactor to widows and orphans, and will be greatly missed.
At the Boone Unit American Legion Auxiliary monthly meeting the new officers were installed. President L S Isaacs and other posts were announced with plans for a Halloween party on October 31 at 7 30 PM in the Legion Hall. Out of town visitors included Miss Blanch Welsh and Mrs Lola Goldberg.
The Union Bus Terminal moves from Princess Cafe to Linville River Railway depot this Friday. Grayhound and East Tennessee lines will use the new terminal with expanded parking, improved waiting rooms, and easier access, announced by agent Herman Wilcox.
North Carolina residents publish twenty nine works considered for the 1933 Mayflower Society Cup award by the State Literary and Historical Association. Dr. A R Newsome announces the prize with the cup on display in Raleigh Hall of History. The list includes Shepherd Dugger's War Trails of the Blue Ridge.
Catawba County poultrymen recall using water glass to preserve eggs last spring as market prices ranged around ten cents per dozen for preserved eggs while fresh eggs sold higher at twenty eight cents a dozen.
W H Gragg of Boone verifies reports he will resign as Marshal for the Middle North Carolina District effective January 1 or soon after. He will hand in his resignation this week and will aid successor W T Dowd of Sanford, the choice of Senator Reynolds. Gragg praised bipartisan support and cites Roosevelt era economy as a reason for his departure.
Watauga County delinquent properties will be advertised for sale on the first Monday in November. Tax collector A. D. Wilson urges taxpayers to settle before November 6 to avoid extra costs and publication embarrassment as the December sale approaches.
Robert N. Davenport 58 of Spruce Pine was found floating in the Tennessee River near Le Noir City after disappearing on Tuesday. A coroner's jury ruled death by his own action. Davenport, a well known farmer, left Spruce Pine seeking work in Tennessee and left his suitcase home. Survivors include his widow, his aged mother, and five children.
Burl Lowrance suffered a crushed shoulder and other injuries when the car he rode in overturned near Amantha Sunday night. His brother Will Lowrance reportedly escaped with no serious injuries as the vehicle left the highway and turned over.
Deputy Sheriff Albert Farthing recounts the night raid on the Blue Goose Barbecue Stand on Blowing Rock Road. Chief Hagaman died after being shot by Rufus Lewis, with a second bullet lodged in his liver. The raid netted 22 pints of whiskey and three arrests.
The Democrat reports the NRA Now Is the Time to Buy drive merging with Boone’s Third Annual Fall Bargain Carnival. The eight day event starts Saturday October 14 and features major firms offering inducements, with General Johnson urging buying to aid recovery and a mayoral proclamation announcing prizes up to $20 in cash on closing day.
Charles S. Stevenson a longtime local plumber and WWI veteran was installed as chairman of the Watauga Post American Legion at a lively meeting. New district commander Prof Chisholm spoke and officers elected include C. M. Teal as vice commander and Walter C. Greene as adjutant. George Whitehead Jr. of Banner Elk died in Johnson City after one day with diphtheria. Burial followed at the family graveyard with relatives in attendance.
A Plainfield report notes the marriage of Miss Doyce Ashley daughter of Mr and Mrs H M Ashley formerly of Stony Fork to Mr Edwin Loose a native of the city. The couple will reside in Plainfield. Jackson County farmers plan to harvest black locust seed this fall due to strong demand and healthy crop prospects in the mountain area.
Rev. Melvin Michael died at his Harley home near Wilkes County on October 4. Funeral services were held the next day at Stony Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Finley Carlton presiding. Survivors include widow and children Leonard Boone Taft North Wilkesboro Charlie Toy Willard Madie Vera Harley plus many distant relatives. he was a respected mountain pastor with ties to Watauga County.
Commissioner Gurney P Hood spent Tuesday night in the city visiting banks in the state section to discuss joining the Federal Government Deposits Guarantee Plan. He called at the Watauga County Bank and praised progress toward a speedy reopening.
John Hudson, colored, drew eight months on the roads for assault with a deadly weapon after an encounter with three white men John Critcher Bill Casey and Craig Holler. A knife was used without serious injury. Sherman Winebarger received four months suspended sentence. Davie Brown and Kate Moretz were assessed with cost for interfering with an officer in the line of duty.
Grady Moretz a Boone High School teacher and respected Democratic worker filed to run as a repealist delegate for the November 7 election. W. W. Mast is named as the opposing dry candidate by the prohibition forces amid questions of petition compliance. The county board of elections was to meet to confirm nominations, with officials noting possible legal missteps in the dry nomination process.
Rev L F Kent a popular Episcopal minister of Valle Crucis will remain in Watauga County until the bishop of the diocese is elected and consecrated. Election is expected around the 17th of the month with consecration about two months later. He had been set to go to Shepherdstown West Virginia to become rector of Trinity Church but Shepherdstown vestry may hold the call until the diocese settles.
Banner Elk Lees-McRae College will add a printing plant this fall as a self-sustaining industry. President Edgar H. Tufts says the plant will employ several students and print for Grandfather Orphanage and Grace Hospital. He invites donors with spare printing equipment to contact him.
Mr W R Winkler of the W R Chevrolet Company reports sales increased over last year with more than twenty carloads of cars and trucks and four carloads of pickups sold in recent months. He says business is up more than a hundred percent and collections are steady.
