The Democrat resumes its light feature section after a period of mourning and notes plans to continue with tales of blushing maidens, cops, liars, beggars, and more. The piece promises a return to its humor and a nod to literary whimsy.
Clint Norris, once a police officer who boasted of gun and badge, moves to Route 2 life. He builds a modern home with a light plant, wired outbuildings, a spring pool, and a thriving farm. Cabbage, potatoes, buckwheat, turnips, corn fill the fields and an apple orchard bustles with fruit and canned goods.
Floyd Palmer and his wife handle the Observer agency in Boone delivering about two hundred morning editions daily. They leave at 1 30 in the morning, load in Hickory at 4 00, and return to mountains by 8 00. They weather blizzards storms and heavy rain to ensure timely delivery year after year.
Members of the Junior Order United American Mechanics in North Carolina total 44 656 per state council secretary Sam F. Vance of Kernersville. The count includes 1 044 members in 21 new councils formed this year. North Carolina ranks third nationally in membership. Juniors in this county number 42, per the state secretary.
The Democrat reports compliance with National Recovery Administration rules with shortened hours and a new employee paid to conform. The Blue Eagle display was delayed by partial reorganization but will appear as guidance for ads and press deadlines. The paper vows continued full public service.
Officials anticipate a mid month opening as reorganization proceeds smoothly. Cashier Hagaman reports most stock assessments paid and deposits converting to preferred stock while townsfolk expect a festive air and record deposits at Boone when the bank opens.
The squirrel hunting season opened last Sunday as outdoors enthusiasts flood the woods on frosty mornings. Local sportmen report abundant game with many claiming the legal daily limit of ten squirrels. County Warden Farthing notes license sales exceed previous years, helped by the reduced fee of sixty cents versus one dollar twenty five.

George Grady Brown, three days old son of Mr and Mrs Roscoe Brown, died at their Boone area home Monday evening. Funeral services were to be held Tuesday with burial at Howard's Creek cemetery. Friends gathered and the grave was banks of flowers.
Superintendent Charles E. Smathers announces an old time fish fry and social at the Rutherwood Fish Hatchery on Friday evening the 13th. Guests pay a small cover fee to cover expenses with any surplus used to buy fish food for fingerlings. Fryed trout, cole slaw and potatoes will be served starting at 6 pm. Attendees should notify Smathers, Game Warden H Grady Farthing or The Democrat office by the 10th for headcount. Deputy wardens are urged to estimate county guests. The event promises good music talks and ample outdoor dining with a large regional turnout expected.
Mrs. W. M. Blackburn, 85, died at home in the Saxon community last Sunday. Funeral services were held at Fairview Methodist Church on Monday with Revs. Levi Greene Winkler and Smith taking part. Interment followed in a nearby cemetery. She was born Martha Blackburn, sister of the late Congressman Spencer Blackburn and Manley Blackburn, and widow of W. M. Blackburn. Surviving children are Mesdames W. M. Day and Sherman Brown. Dr. T. C. Blackburn attended the funeral.
Smith Motor Sales of Lenoir, Ford agency for Watauga County, has moved back to Lenoir from Boone. They will service cars sold in this territory from Lenoir shops and continue to solicit new car sales there, with an announcement published today.
Mr Roy Keplar of Keplar's Style Shoppe hires contractor Mark Holsclaw to oversee remodeling. The store is enlarged with new mirrors equipment and popular tints. The shoe department will be expanded and the dry goods emporium aims to stand as an acme in modern retail.
Boone leaders report widespread business cooperation as the NRA recovery movement advances. While most shops signed on and some employers agreed to detailed letters to General Johnson, exact job gains remain unreported. Mayor Moore urges a national buying drive and a fall bargain carnival to lift retailing.
Professor Chisholm of Crossnore new Seventeenth District commander will address the Legion and Auxiliary Friday evening as Wa tauga Post installs officers for the year. Charles Stevenson becomes Post Commander with Mrs. W. R. Absher presiding auxiliary officer. Other officers include Teal Weaver Greene Gross Ward Miller Cooke Norris Smith Bingham Younce Farthing Osborne Greer Cushing. Refreshments and music planned. full membership urged for the event.
An automobile driven by Howard Hartley and a truck driven by his brother Arthur collided on Brushy Fork late Sunday night. Howard Hartley is under care of a Charlotte bone specialist with a crushed arm possibly needing amputation. Tommie Eller of Beaver Dam is in Caldwell Hospital with a crushed chest and serious cuts. Arthur Hartley escaped injury and two other auto occupants had minor injuries. Names of other passengers unavailable. cause and full details are pending. The Hartley family hails from the New River area.
Voters face the final day to file as a repeal or pro repeal candidate for the Eighteenth Amendment in Watauga County. No petitions yet nominating a wet or dry candidate have been filed, though W. W. Mast of Valle Crucis is circulating petitions. The wet camp is seen as lackluster and no strong repeal push is reported.

Greene announces prohibition meetings next Sunday at Mt Vernon Church Elk Knob Church and Mt Ephriam Church with speakers W R Lovill T E Bing ham W F Miller Robert Holshouser Rev W C Greene and M H Norris. Greene says gatherings have grown to about four hundred in outlying communities to hear about national penalty laws.
Daniel Boone Council 129 Junior Order grew to fifty three members after seven new Juniors were added at a Legion Hall meeting. John E. Smith Linney Walker reinstated. Jerry Brewer Owen Wilson Charles C. Rogers Will H. Jones Dell Richardson initiated by Burkemont Council Morganton. Visitors from Granfather Esceola Morganton joined. Next meeting October 15 in American Legion Hall with several candidates to be initiated.
In Raleigh the workmen's compensation calendar lists seventy cases to be heard in October across North Carolina. Six cases involve deaths. Industrial Commissioner T A Wilson will preside with sessions in Newton Lincolnton Shelby Rutherfordton Brevard Franklin Bryson City Robbinsville Murphy Boone and other towns over three weeks. The October 12 session at 9 am will hear Jake Ollis versus Fanning and Furr in Boone.
