George Bernard Shaw hailed Albert Einstein as the man who created a new universe and listed Pythagoras, Ptolemy, Kepler, Copernicus, Aristotle, Galileo, and Newton as others who reshaped natural laws. He warned future scientists may correct Einstein but science advances by challenging ideas, with truth emerging gradually over time.
The Alleghany County Mutual Farmers Exchange purchased 2,000 bags of cottonseed meal for members to feed cattle this winter and plans to buy 1,000 more soon.
Watauga County's highway system totals 335.6 miles with 5.5 unimproved miles. The State system covers 9,040.12 miles, about 60 percent hard surfaced, and county totals nationwide reach 45,092 miles with 912.7 hard surfaced. Chairman Doughton notes cost and tax implications for state takeover and gasoline tax increments.
High Point College wins 13 to 6 as Captain Swart leads the Panthers to victory over Appalachian State College in a homecoming game. Swart returned a kickoff 75 yards for a final touchdown, with Cory to Litman adding a 20 yard score. Appalachian’s Harris scored in the third period. Mountaineers meet Boiling Springs College next Saturday at 2:30.
Roscoe Prevette, a prominent North Wilkesboro clothier and local figure, died by hanging at his Eighth Street home after locking himself in his room at dinner time. Ill health and despondency had marked months prior, and his family found him deceased when they entered. He leaves a widow, a son, and several siblings.
The canvass confirms Congressman Robert L. Doughton was re elected with a 15007 vote plurality over Republican Ed F Wakefield. Majorities by county include Alexander 648 Alleghany 766 Ashe 683 Cabarrus 2975 Caldwell 1816 Iredell 3859 Rowan 3275 Stanly 706 Watauga 279.
A fierce blizzard swept from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific coast, dumping up to 24 inches of snow. Two deaths were attributed to the storm as mountain passes were snowbound, travel deteriorated, and highways were clogged with drifts.
John Winebarger prominent Watauga County resident died at his Meat Camp home after a brief illness. He was 81, a lifelong farmer and active in church affairs. Surviving are wife, son Olin G. Winebarger, four brothers, three sisters, all of Watauga County. Funeral at Meat Camp Methodist Church conducted by Dr. W A Deaton and Rev. L A Wilson. burial in family graveyard.
Governor Gardner asks the 100 county boards to choose careful, experienced tax supervisors for the 4 year real estate reassessment. Supervisors will be named at December meetings and begin revaluation in January with a 3 day state school December 10 to aid them. The State will reimburse expenses for travel and lodging and uniform listing blanks will guide a fair valuation.
Lee Carender of Matney sends The Democrat two tubers weighing about three pounds each. The smooth, blemish free potatoes resemble prize winners and he claims two hundred bushels of similar yield from a quarter acre.
Professor T. E. Story was unanimously elected president of the Schoolmasters' Club at a banquet Tuesday night at the Smithey Hotel in Wilkesboro. Educational leaders attended, invited by Professor and Mrs. C. C. Wright of Wilkes Patriot.
Ed S Day 33 native of Watauga and Boone business owner died in Wilkes Hospital NB North Wilkesboro after being shot in the back at his meat market on October 29. Webster held on bond and jailed to await Wilkes Superior Court in March. Day served in WWI with the 81st Division on the Verdun front. He leaves a widow Mary Beach and five children. He was buried at Cove Creek Baptist Church in Boone with Wilkes Post American Legion pallbearers.
The Watauga Chapter of the American Red Cross launches a Roll Call Membership Drive Monday through Wednesday chaired by last year's successful ladies. A dollar membership supports local relief and Washington headquarters, aiding soldiers and disaster responses. those unable to meet a solicitor can visit The Democrat office to join and receive a receipt.
County Game Warden H Grady Farthing warns outdoorsmen that November 20 marks the first day of the open season for quail and rabbit with license and landowner permission required. No pheasant season this year, and protection urged for native grouse and ring-necked pheasants to prevent decline. Fur dealer licenses must be obtained before trading furs.
Rev H M Wellman newly appointed pastor of the Watauga Circuit of the Methodist Church expects to begin his assignment next Sunday. A Duke University graduate, he joined the Methodist Conference in 1914 and has since contributed in many activities. He is a Master Mason active in community improvement efforts. Mrs Wellman, a native of McDowell County, supports his work and they have three children, two in high school.
Mrs. Margaret Catherine Jennings wife of Avery County dentist Dr R D Jennings died at her Banner Elk home after a brief illness from internal injuries after a fall She was 64 Funeral services were held at home conducted by Dr J D Rankin and Rev W R Smith Interment was in Banner Elk Cemetery Moretz Funeral Home of Boone assisted Surviving are her husband three children F P Jennings Edward Jennings and Mrs Mary Sue Helms plus brothers and a sister and seventeen grandchildren
Wates Greene of Middle Fork, 76, died at home last Thursday after a two year illness. Funeral services were held Friday at Middle Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Shores officiating. Interment followed in the local cemetery. Survived by a widow and eight children including Dock Greene, Newton Greene, Bynum Greene, Milton Greene, Lloyd Greene, Fred Greene, Mrs. J. D. Harrison, and Mrs. Wiley Hollifield.
A Sunday evening program at Boone Methodist Church features hymns and anthems. It includes "Softly Now the Light of Day" and "Creation" with choirs, a talk on "Church Hymns" by Miss Achelle, solos, duets, a quartet, and the benediction.
The Boone Methodist Church ladies hold their annual bazaar at the Blackburn Hotel on Thursday afternoon and evening November 20. Fancy work sale runs 4 to 10 PM. From 6 PM oysters and chicken salad will be served. Public invited.
Twenty four Johnson City merchants and boosters visited Boone for a tobacco meeting at the county courthouse attended by over 150 Watauga farmers. Speakers from Johnson City Greeneville and Washington County discussed acreage, marketing and warehousing.
The Republican State Executive Committee disbursed 17204 77 for campaign purposes from May 1 to November 14. Final receipts and disbursements for 1930 show total expenditures around 17204 77, far below the 1928 total of about 75000. Major contributor Geo M Pritchard of Asheville gave 7400 in total.
