Any tobacco grower in Watauga County or other farmers planning to grow Burley tobacco who do not currently receive the Burley Tobacco Bulletin will be furnished the publication free if they apply at once to the Watauga County Bank. The bank emphasizes its interest in local agriculture and in providing the best information for new tobacco growers.
State wide counts show 16 810 criminal cases disposed in 1928 29 and 15 732 in 1929 30 across 100 counties with breakdowns by race sex and disposition. Election results list Bailey Pritchard Pell Winborne and others with majorities and bond referendum outcomes.
A conference of Presbyterian Church leaders met at the Daniel Boone Hotel on Tuesday evening to discuss building a house of worship in Boone. No definite plans were announced, but leaders expect action soon. The gathering included Rev. J. J. Fix and other ministers from Bristol and surrounding areas, noting a sizable local Presbyterian presence, including about seventy in the college.
The Pastime Theatre welcomes the Cook Sisters on Friday and Saturday as part of the regular program. Watauga musicians known for string music singing and dancing they have won many prizes in contests. Admission remains unchanged.
The lost 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation, issued by George Washington, was recovered in 1921 by Dr. J. C. Fitzpatrick of the Library of Congress from an auction in New York City. Written by William Jackson and signed by Washington, it called for November 26 as a national day of thanks.
Mrs. Jonathan Norris 69 of Meat Camp died at home on the 15th after a protracted illness. Funeral services were held at Meat Camp Baptist Church with Reverends L. A. Wilson and Roe Payne. Interment followed in Meat Camp Cemetery. Surviving are husband, two daughters Maudie Greene and Myrlite Norris, two brothers Jacob and Henry Lewis, and one Mrs. L. A. Greene.
Central Tire Co opens a new service station in the former Moretz Motor Co building. W. Ralph Winkler announces the remodeled facility offers gasoline, washing, and battery services, with A. L. Hodges as manager. Grand opening Friday includes a free oil quart with five gallons purchased Saturday.
Zionville North Carolina Rev R C Eggers issues a correction to the Democrat debunking claims that N T Byers blocked ballots on election day. He explains Byers sat in a chair per his understanding of the law and was jailed briefly until a bond was set. The editor offers apology for any injury to Byers from earlier reports.
Harry Faw secretary of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce commends Watauga and Boone for progressiveness and the agricultural program. The note dated November 20 1930 expresses gratitude for courtesies and hopes for a future visit.
Raleigh Governor Max Gardner proclaims Thursday November 27 as Thanksgiving Day urging observation in the spirit of the Fathers. He praises universal observance, moral and material prosperity, and the nation’s founders while calling on citizens to work, face duties, and seek personal growth through trials.
Three teams of two ladies canvass Watauga town raising a dollar to aid the suffering. Despite rough winter weather and hindrances the chairman extends the drive to Saturday evening, the 29th, noting strong cooperation from residents and most business leaders.
A November meeting of Watauga County potato growers in the Boone courthouse drew at least 125 farmers and students from Cove Creek High School. H R Niswonger urged attention to market demands, touting Irish Cobler as desirable and proposing a county potato club with a 400 bushel per acre contest and nonmembership prizes.
Work started Monday on the Laurel Creek road after the state highway commission took over the route. Sand and gravel are being laid near Sugar Grove post office, with a larger force moving further down the river. The project aims to provide a quicker river route to Tennessee and to connect two states with a hard surfaced highway to the Avery County line and beyond.
Rev. L. A. Wilson of Meat Camp is gravely ill with a serious condition. Doctors fear pneumonia but are hopeful warding it off will restore his health. Local friends express anxiety yet remain hopeful for recovery.
