He introduced the first electric automobile andDeveloped methods for extracting chlorine from salt forming a basis for the electric power industry at Niagara Falls. He founded a tin salvage and reuse business and built powerful searchlights used by navies. Sperry invented Metal Mike the ships automatic steersman and gyroscopic compass and stabilizers for ships and planes. His latest adds a light weight Diesel aircraft engine and rail flaw detector. Edison ranks only behind him in usefulness of inventions.

A Sunday memorial service at Boone Lutheran Church honored Watauga soldiers who died in Europe during World War I. Rev. J A Yount delivered a sermon on duty and sacrifice, with Lenoir Rhyne Glee Club singing and a veterans’ graves decoration plan announced. Three local soldiers are buried in France.
Raleigh reports Otto Wood of Greensboro, once on death row, has been awarded an A grade at the state prison after escapes and confinement. He is serving 25 years for killing a pathbroker in Greensboro in 1923 and has gained weight since his 1929 release order.
Mr. Chapman, Daytona Beach hotel operator, has leased Mayview Manor in Blowing Rock and will open the popular hostelry on June 20. He arrived Sunday and said he is gratified by the prospects for the tourist season.
A 1929 season saw over 6 million acres of Canadian forests burn, marking the largest conflagration in years. Firefighting and relief efforts mobilized as communities faced widespread smoke and ecological damage.
Grace Lutheran Church of Boone celebrates its first anniversary with a morning service led by Dr. O J Chandler of Boone Methodist Church and a 2 30 PM song service under Rev Sam Sox. A basket dinner followed on East Main Street with praise and remarks praising the church’s role in education and community life.
Mr H Grady Farthing reports 150 pheasant eggs from the State Department of Conservation have been spread across the county to be hatched by brood hens and raised like chicks until release. He notes strict two year protection. Anglers report good brook and rainbow trout catches and increased game fish due to conservation work. A Watauga County license is not transferable to other counties without a state license and private land permits. 1650 acres of the Linney estate on Rich Mountain are leased for a possible game preserve with stock by the state game warden C H England once details are set.
A four week old baby boy was left Monday at the Rockford home of Mr and Mrs T B Holyfield by an unseen party. A Winston Salem letter arrived the next day saying the child named Baby Thomas was born April 21 and had traveled from West Virginia seeking care. The note asked the couple to love and care for the infant as their own and promised to explain later.
New York May 27 fluid extract of ginger known as ginger jack was ruled an intoxicating liquor under the Volstead act by Federal Judge Caffey. The decision states the ginger preparation is capable of producing paralysis and is treated as an unlawful beverage.
The Mount Airy District Conference of the Methodist Church met at Boone Methodist Church. Rev. W. E. Poovey presided and notes on past service. Opening sermon by Dr. O. J. Chandler followed by communion. About 150 preachers and delegates attended from seven counties plus others, with 125 churches and 30 pastoral charges in the district.
Watauga County wool pool will accept wool on June 5 and 6 in Boone. The State Division of Marketing will supervise. The Southwestern Wool Growers Association will advance 20 cents a pound and ship fleece to Baltimore for sale, with final payment to producers. Members W W Mast R T Greer Arliz W Brown lead the committee.
County election boards are ordered to provide separate Democratic and Republican boxes for all June primary contests except the U S Senate where both boxes are required. Judge J Crawford Biggs forwards the instruction. Ballots sent to 30 counties exclude judicial, solicitor, and congressional contests. Democratic and Republican ballot designs are described. candidates listed for Senate and corporation commissioner races.
In Winston-Salem a elderly Black woman in the Pond section painted the undersides of her cabbages red to deter theft. She noticed heads losing leaves, checked a neighbor’s half-eaten dinner, and found red under leaves in the garbage. The thief vanished when authorities arrived.
Since the trout season opened in this county anglers report enormous catches. H Grady Farthing posted a rainbow of 16 1 4 inches from Winkler's Creek. Leo B Vaughn added two big fish from the Watauga River, one 17 1 2 inches long. J W Bryan claims the season record with a rainbow claimed as two feet long, but weight not disclosed. The race for the official grand champion continues.
Mary Fay Lankford daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Lankford Moravian Falls section was killed when run over by an automobile driven by Sanford Call Hunting Creek near her home. She died at a local hospital and Call was jailed on a murder charge.
Miss Dorothy Swingle entertained at a te a at the Banner Elk home of President Edgar Tufts to announce the engagement of Miss Erlene Greene secretary to the president and Professor Leo K. Pritchett principal of Lees McRae College. Attending were President and Mrs Tufts Miss Margaret Tufts and Miss Frances Stinson with many guests including Dr Robert O Flinn Mrs Tate Mrs Hardin Wakefield Phoebe Wakefield Parker of Black Mountain and others from Lees McRae Grandfather Orphanage and Davidson College.
The Democrat, citing census data from R. P. Caldwell, shows Watauga County at 15 155 residents in 1930, up from 13 777 in 1920, a gain of 1 278. Boone town rises to 1 293 from 374, a 919 increase, aided by roads and rail and the area's growing status as an educational center.
The Chrysler Building in New York was formally opened, reaching 1 030 feet above Forty-second Street and Lexington Avenue. It surpasses the Eiffel Tower by 46 feet and the Bank of Manhattan building by 75 feet, boasting features like the largest lobby painting, a high restaurant, and the Skyscraper Club with 78 stories.
