The annual county singing will be held at the courthouse on the first Sunday in June. J. M. Hodges is president and N. L. Harrison secretary. Many adjoining counties are expected to participate and a large crowd is hoped for a music filled day.
The Lutheran Church marks its first anniversary on May 25 with morning sermon by a state minister and an afternoon visit by a Japanese missionary. The American Legion holds an 11 o’clock service, followed by a grounds picnic and a 2 pm service featuring a special song service led by Rev. Sam Sox. Everyone is invited.
Dallas report says Bishop James Cannon Jr. of Washington D C begged and received forgiveness from the M E Church South for stock speculation with a New York firm later seized by federal authorities. Delegates at the Quadrennial Conference watched as the Episcopacy Committee cleared him of blame.
The Legion Auxiliary names Mrs. R. D. Hodges as poppy day chair, planning a record sale to aid disabled veterans and their families. Poppies cost a dime, funds support local relief work and veterans' dependents, with leftovers aiding wives and children in Watauga county.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at the Lutheran Church in Boone for Watauga soldiers who died in World War II. Rev. J A Yount will lead. Boone Methodist members will join. The American Legion requests all veterans and families attend. seating reserved for ex service members. The 11 a m service follows a Legion committee arranged program.
Washington confirms Owen J. Roberts of Pennsylvania as Supreme Court Justice after eight days of Senate debate that ended with no opposition or dissenting vote. Parker nomination had been rejected, marking a sharp contrast in the Senado’s actions on the two nominees.
Appalachian State Teachers College conferred bachelor’s degrees on 13 four-year graduates and diplomas to 81 two-year students during Friday morning exercises led by Dr. A. T. Allen. Governor Newland awarded degrees to the class amid a large town turnout. Watauga County led in graduates with 11 recipients including six two-year normal graduates. The event marked the school’s elevation to a standard institution.
