Thirteen dangerous inmates fled the State Hospital for the Criminal Insane before daylight. Two were recaptured within hours on a trunk line highway. The escape used a third floor ruse. guards were bound and the night supervisor Owen was abducted and released at the main entrance.

Clyde and James Hayes of Limestone Tennessee drove a Chevrolet from Limestone to St John Washington in six days, covering 3140 miles without mishap. They will tend their father Walter Hayes 1300 acre wheat crop in the Northwest and return to Limestone in October.
In Biloxi Mississippi on June 3 the Confederate Veterans held the fortieth reunion with a large tent ceremony. The U S Marine Band played Dixie as Rear Admiral Thomas Pickett Magruder addressed attendees. Veterans joined an automobile parade to inaugurate the Biloxi bridge honoring World War I service members.
Henry Greer, about 80, of Mabel, died at his home Sunday after a long illness. The funeral was held at Union Church Monday with Rev. Wellington Swift, and burial followed in the church cemetery. He leaves a widow, two sons Andrew and Charles Greer, and a daughter Mrs. Henry Norris.
J. W. Davis, 60, a farmer near Danville Virginia, is dying from self imposed starvation as he believes his life has ended. He predicts Friday as his time up and refuses to eat since May 1 while drinking water to delay death. He keeps a revolver but says shooting himself would be morally wrong.

Unofficial word from local officials indicates three U S highways approved to run through Watauga County. The routes would connect Twin Oaks near Sparta to Ingalls via Blowing Rock and Boone, Greensboro to Boone via Winston Salem and North Wilkesboro, and Bristol to Columbia via Boone Blowing Rock Lenoir Hickory Newton and Gastonia.
Frost on Sunday morning June 1 damaged potato crops near Watauga towns while gardens fared better. In Boone Mr J M Moretz plowed and planted early corn. Damage was uneven with New River area hardest and Ashe Avery counties hit harder than Watauga.
