Ford Motor Co reports 1929 profits of 381.8 million the best year since 1927 when six months were lost for Model A plant upgrades. It shows cash on hand at year end 346.9 million, with a single owner stock structure enabling resilience through prior losses and a crisis era.
A push to eliminate every grade crossing grows nationwide with railroads bearing most costs on Federal aid roads. Since 1917, 4,676 crossings have been eliminated on Federal aid routes, mainly by relocating highways rather than building bridges or subways. The White House Library project adds 500 volumes, including Mark Twain, Bunyan, and Kingsley, to educate future generations.
The writer describes a face to face talk with a distant person through two way television from a room on Bethune Street to another on Dey Street. Engineers say it will work over long distances by radio, with future rooms in cities for fee based distant communication. The piece notes current costs but predicts cheaper operation and widespread adoption.

Forty-six graduates received diplomas, with Maisie Jean Jones named most polite.
More than a hundred policy holders of the Farmers Mutual Fire Association northwestern division met in Boone courthouse to decide on actions regarding recent assessments. They unanimously voted to resist payment, appointing a committee of C. D. Taylor, J. B. Horton, Dr. H. B. Perry, L. A. Greene and W. Y. Farthing to represent holders in all necessary matters.
J Edgar Brown Jr son of attorney John E Brown of Boone will graduate from Oak Ridge Military Academy next Wednesday May 641 This is his first year at the school and his rapid progress pleases friends He is among the brightest students in the scientific course and is considered the prophet of the graduating class He will return to Boone after school to spend the summer with his parents west of town
Mary Klutz thirteen daughter of Mr and Mrs Dan Klutz of Blowing Rock died Friday morning of pneumonia after five days illness She recently graduated elementary school and would have entered high school this fall She was a faithful pupil popular with classmates and active in the Presbyterian Church The funeral was held Saturday at home Rev Walter Keys officiating Interment followed in Reform Church Cemetery near the home
In Raleigh a widow stores 120 quarts of pre war bottled in bond liquor in her cellar. A friend sought attorney advice saying the whiskey arrived with her son who later joined the army in 1917. The lawyer noted it is not unlawful to own if stamped from pre prohibition days and if officials confirm it was stored before prohibition.
In Lenoir North Carolina on Blowing Rock Highway near the city limits a wreck involving a Boone funeral home hearse bound to Monroe damaged the vehicle of J L Saunders. Drivers Robert Moretz and his brother Harrison Moretz were jailed on charges of driving while intoxicated and drunkenness with the hearse damaged and taken for repairs. A bail hearing is planned in Lenoir with defense claiming neither brother was intoxicated or reckless.
Daniel Boone Chapter of the Walton League held a well attended meeting at the state fish hatchery on May 8. Leo Vaughan and C. E. Smahters led supper for members and guests as talks focused on fish and wildlife preservation. The group urged county officials to back a fire zone with the State Department of Conservation and settled plans for a May 17 meeting in Blowing Rock to install at least 25 new members, with 40 present at the last gathering.
The State Division of Marketing will send a representative to Boone on Saturday May 17 to discuss wool prices and industry matters. It will meet with Watauga wool committee members W M Mast R T Greer and Arlie Brown and invite other interested parties. With wool prices recently low the meeting aims to secure better prices and information will be sent to growers and dealers afterward.
Mr. G E Mack of Winston-Salem, a Twentieth Century System of Business Colleges representative, travels to Boone to prep for a new campus. Classes already run at West Jefferson and Sparta. The program offers shorthand, typewriting, bookkeeping, business English, and office practice along with lectures on banking and merchandising. Mr Mock travels with Mrs Mock and their young son.
Maisie Jean Jones was awarded the $5 gold piece offered by Professor and Mrs. J A Williams for the most polite student at Boone High School. The presentation occurred last week during Boone High School senior graduation ceremonies.
F Maltba aged 42 prominent Boone resident died in Monroe hospital after a fast freight struck the sedan carrying him and George Cottrell a former Boone resident now of Valmead. Cottrell severely injured but in critical condition. The crash occurred near Bakers as they were en route to Southern Pines where Maltba had winter work. Remains brought to Boone and funeral held at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Maltba survived by widow and two children Valle and Dave, mother Mrs. Wilson Maltba, a sister and four brothers.
Mrs Thomas Beach, 26, died at her Boone home after months of illness. Funeral services were held at Mountain City Baptist Church with Rev Brown officiating and interment in the local cemetery. She was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J A Shupe. Survived by husband and two children J W and Thomas Jr.
John Critcher of Moravian Falls died suddenly last Thursday at 2 PM from heart failure while walking toward the highway near his home. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Moravian Falls, and he leaves a wife Rosa Crouch Critcher, four sons including A. N. Critcher of North Wilkesboro, and relatives in Statesville and Hickory.
Miss Pearl Bingham daughter of the late Dr E F Bingham has taught at Keystone Grade School in Johnson City for two years and will sail May 24 from New York on an Italian liner to Naples Italy as a private instructor for Captain and Mrs Jack Bennett of Washington. The party will tour Italy Switzerland France Germany and other European countries returning in early September after preparations in Pearton.
Dr. B B Dougherty president of Appalachian State College in Boone visited Iredell County schools. The college this year graduates 18 from the four year course, with 75 graduates in the two year class and 13 in the four year class for 1930. The student body includes 323 freshmen, 258 sophomores and 62 juniors.
Walter Price of Silverstone is jailed on three warrants for forgery, selling whisky, and resisting an officer. Deputy Hagaman, with Deputies Mast and Norris, made the arrest. Price has prior arrests and escape histories, with local officers searching him for twelve months.
Mrs Susan Moody 87 widow of George Moody of Beaver Dam died at her sister Mrs Hiram Dougherty’s Boone home last Thursday morning. Funeral Friday at Boone Baptist Church with Rev P A Hix, burial at Cove Creek. A member of a respected Watauga family she lived simply and died in care of relatives and her sister.
Mr H C Hayes of Blowing Rock reports an Atlantic Investigating Company letter seeking the present address of H H Cook in his city The inquiry notes the investigation concerns an estate Hayes does not know Cook and has forwarded the query to The Democrat Citizens with information requested regarding Cook's whereabouts
Banner Elk High School will close on May 26 as Lees McRae opens as a junior college. The senior class of 32 will graduate Monday evening with commencement address by J. Fred Johnson of Kingsport Tennessee. Class night is Saturday May 24 and the baccalaureate sermon Sunday morning at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church by Rev Richard Orme Flinn of Atlanta.
Jesse Baxter advance agent for the Reno Shows visited the city yesterday promoting the vaudeville troupe. He says the show is up to its usual high standard with the best old actors retained and new ones added. A large chorus of beautiful girls accompanies the tour for a full week starting next Monday.
More than fifty Boone businesses will close from 10 30 a m to 12 m to allow managers and employees to attend Appalachian State Teachers College commencement. Dr A T Allen will address the first degree class as the college marks its first year as a standard four year institution. a signed town pledge commends the event.
President Hoover named Owen J. Roberts of Philadelphia to the Supreme Court in place of Parker. The nomination drew general Senate approval and was expected to face smooth confirmation. Roberts, a Republican, has a long record at the bar and a key role in the oil prosecutions, earning praise from Senator Reed and others.
