Forest Fires Rage Across Ashe County Timberlands
Fires started in Ashe county forests along the Watauga line July 29 reached control Sunday after six days of effort by about 200 men. The blaze burned at least four thousand acres of timber, damaged homes and outbuildings, and destroyed lumber. Additional fires reported near Blowing Rock on the Caldwell side of the mountains.

In Caldwell and Lenoir counties the Boone area of Pisgah National Forest is ablaze with 15000 to 20000 acres burning. Fire began Sunday on Upper Creek and, after a Monday containment, reignited due to strong winds. In McDowell County near Old Fort, 800 firefighters battle Grandfather Mountain timber fires as a slight rain offers little relief. Authorities say the McDowell flames mark a historic first for the county's forest fire response.
