Beloved Lady Mrs. David F. Baird Dies After 82 Years
Mrs. David F. Baird a Watauga resident and longtime Christian beacon passed away after a life marked by charity and community service. The widow of ex Sheriff's Baird, she lived with her son Thomas on the family farm and leaves five daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Interment followed at the Baird burying grounds with a large gathering of relatives and friends in attendance.

Officer arrests slayer after four months chase
Deputy Sheriff L H Wright of Mitchell county ends a four month manhunt for Charles Tolley, wanted for murder. Tolley, found in Jenkins Kentucky under the name T W Cook, was asleep on the night shift and arrested without resistance. He is jailed in Bakersville and will be sent to Swain county to answer for killing Deputy Sheriff Allen Crisp during a December 24 incident. A $600 reward is to be claimed by Wright.
