Legion feats Fourth of July celebration in Boone

Watauga Post American Legion sponsors a full Fourth of July program at the College Athletic Field. Activities start with a 9 45 a m parade and prize awards for decorated vehicles. Baseball games, potato and sack races, boxing at 12 30 noon, a greasy pig race at 5 30 pm, a street dance planned for night. An aeroplane will give day flights and 25 cent admission covers all entertainment and refreshments.

Music Camp Opens in Banner Elk For Elite South Musicians

The Southern Appalachian Music Camp began its second season in Banner Elk under W. F. Warlick of Conover and Christian D. Kutschinski of Winston-Salem. The program runs until August 7 with a opening concert in Banner Elk next Saturday featuring champion high school musicians of the South.

Building & Loan mails checks for nine thousand in interest

Dividend checks totaling about five thousand dollars were mailed to two hundred investors by the Wa tauga Building and Loan Association. The semi annual earnings at five percent were paid ahead of time with a note that the institution remains worth 100 cents on the dollar and that a new stock series opens July first.

Local men named on day committee in dry campaign

Clyde R. Greene and Rev. Tipton Greene of Boone and Rev. J. A. Mc Kaughan of Sherwood were named to the State central committee by United Dry Forces in Raleigh. The 200 member panel was appointed without county lines and local plans await a city forces meeting before action. Watauga County’s dry status is a concern, with no word yet on repealist organization.

Stores to Close on 4th Across City

All city stores will close Tuesday for the Fourth with possible exception of drug stores. Cafes will stay open. The curb market at Lenoir Caldwell County now sells over 500 dollars of farm produce each month, with 21 farm families selling each market day.

Watauga Bank Poised to Open After R F C Loan Approval

Watauga County Bank officials traveled to Raleigh to discuss final details with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. If the loan is approved by Washington soon, the bank could resume normal operations within two to three weeks, with a reopening application to Commissioner of Banks Gurney P. Hood following approval.

The 50 bed brick Watauga Hospital, built on former college property by a joint State and Duke Endowment effort, nears occupancy. A joint committee will appraise state land, and a Duke representative will review construction this week as funds are ready to finish.

Miss Lucinda Lowe Dies at Banner Elk in 82nd Year

Miss Lucinda C Lowe longtime Banner Elk resident died Sunday from heart trouble at age eighty two. Born May 13 1852 in Henry County Virginia she moved to Banner Elk in 1876 and remained active in community life. Funeral service held at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev Marion Murray.

Banner Elk A music camp to hold second term this summer

W F Warlick announced a second term for the Southern Appalachian Music Camp to run from July 10 to August 7. Christian D Kutschinski of Winston Salem serves as musical director. the camp welcomes student musicians from the South and is held each summer at Banner Elk.
