The eighty-odd optimist known as Uncle Dick Hodges shares a humorous life philosophy: success or not, health or illness, recovery or death, and heaven or hell. He declares if headed to heaven no worries, while the other place promises busy handshakes and no concerns.

A community mourns two dogs Wag and Trixie killed by poisoned biscuits. Children hold funerals on a vacant lot, lay flowers, and mark a small cemetery while asking why the pets were harmed and wishing justice for their loss.
Will Carter of Boone's Green Heights wakes to frantic poultry noises finds a possum clamped to a rooster's leg. The marsupial is discovered to have a pouch bearing eight embryo night prowlers. Mother and young are relocated to a hill area as frost settles in.
Watauga members of the Eighty-first Wildcats division will attend a wartime reunion in Winston-Salem North Carolina from July 2 to July 5. Memorial services, a smoker, business sessions, a ball game, parades, fireworks and a divisional banquet are planned with events at the Robert E Lee Hotel and Reynolds Memorial Auditorium. Members are asked to write reunion headquarters for details.
The Boone area saw temperatures from 33 to 80 degrees with five clear days and no precipitation in the past week. Average highs averaged 72 and lows 50 with a 22 degree daily range, the 16th marking the greatest spread.
Four sisters from the T Len Cook family study together this summer at Teachers College. They attend the same class and share a tutor, while farmers in Rowan County boost wheat yields by top dressing, with reports noting it as the sole fertilizer on many farms.
Raleigh officials warn retailers they must pass the three percent general sales tax to consumers. A. J. Maxwell says ads claiming to absorb the tax are misdemeanor violations. Exempt items and licensing rules are outlined, with payment schedules and exemptions for government and certain staples.
Miss Katherine Livingstone, state nurse from Raleigh, announces a county midwifery course in July. Meetings promote maternity hygiene and welfare and attendance is required for midwives. Schedule includes Cove Creek July 5 Bethel July 6 Blowing Rock July 7 Boone July 8 at local school buildings and the courthouse.
Boone retailers push tax free discounts with full page ads in The Democrat. C W Teal of Boone Department Store highlights dry goods marked down with no tax if bought now. Farmers Hardware and others offer special summer buying inducements to draw shoppers to Boone.
Mary E. Watson eight months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Amos Watson of Deep Gap died Sunday. Funeral services and interment were held in the same neighborhood on Monday.
In Recorders Court, the Board of Education of Watauga County failed to win damages against Earl Ward of Tennessee over a Cove Creek school bus. Judge Sudderth ruled the board could not recover 100 in actual damages or 400 punitive. appeal to Superior Court followed as the bus carrying pupils was seized amid debt disputes.
The North Carolina Young Democratic Voters Club organizes a state meeting at Wrightsville Beach on Saturday July 8. Watauga County's Jim Rivers urges interested members to contact him for room reservations. The event plans a large turnout with Senator Robert R. Reynolds and the full Congressional delegation expected. A new state organization will be formed and officers elected for two years. Special Seashore Hotel rates are offered to attendees.
Sheriff A. Y. Howell and deputies seized a sixty gallon solid copper distillery on Beech Mountain early Monday. About 150 gallons of what appeared to be corn beer were also destroyed. The still was nearly new and had likely seen no more than two runs. This was the eighteenth capture by the sheriff's office since January 1.
The Boone Baptist Church choir under Mrs. Guy H. Hill directs a sacred music program in the church auditorium Sunday at 8 p m replacing the regular service. The public is invited. Miss Elizabeth Wilson of Vilas visited friends in Elizabethton Tenn last weekend.
The Yonahlessee Road in Avery County North Carolina connects Blowing Rock and Linville. The last eight and three quarter miles remain under construction with completion planned by September first. Financed with Federal Emergency Relief funds the project employs 150 workers and totals 125000 dollars.
R. L. Cooge Potter fifty five years old of Tamarack died last Thursday from injuries after falling from a heavily loaded motor truck. Funeral services were held at his home by Rev Blackburn with burial at Potter Graveyard. He leaves a widow and six children. He was a son of John O. J. Potter and worked in mercantile and agricultural pursuits in the county.
County Superintendent Smith Hagaman announces training camps will open for certain Citizen's Military Training Camps members this year. Red White and Blue trainers will be taken at dates to be announced, letters authorizing attendance will be sent.
The Boone Child Health Clinic will be held Thursday, June 29 at 5 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church on East Main Street. Parents are invited to bring their children for a free health examination.
