Morrison Wins County in Long Senate Primary Race

Morrison leads in Watauga County with 630 votes to Reynolds 270 as he seeks the Democratic nomination to succeed himself. Gubernatorial and other statewide results plus townships breakdowns show Ehringhaus strong in local contests and Newell carrying Boone Republican ballots with 68 votes.

Mrs J H VonCanon Mrs Sue Covington Mrs L B Banner and Miss Fairy Belle Lowe traveled to Greensboro last week to attend a reception for Mrs Dolly Gann sister to Vice President Curtis. VonCanon helped host a luncheon at the King Cotton Hotel and plans are underway to bring Mrs Gann to Banner Elk on July 4.

Bowie backs Reynolds and opposes Morrison in NC senate race

Judge Tom C. Bowie announces support for Robert R. Reynolds in the Democratic Senate second primary, citing Jeffersonian majority theory and tax policy concerns. Funeral for Mrs Suma Hardin Held Thursday

Funeral services for Mrs. Suma Hardin were held Thursday morning from the Methodist church. The rites were conducted by Rev. J. H. Brendall Jr. with Dr. O. J. Chandler of Asheville assisting. Interment followed in the city cemetery. A large crowd from various communities attended and floral offerings were numerous.

Laymen's Day Observed at Henson's Chapel

Laymen's Day will be observed Sunday June 12 at Henson's Chapel with forenoon laymen's exercises and an evangelistic service in the afternoon. Lay representatives from Henson's Chapel Marble and Valle Crucis, plus the Evangelistic Club of Elkin, will lead.

Watauga Lady Dies in the West

Mrs. Richard Greene 83, a former Watauga County resident, died in Los Angeles after about eight weeks of illness. Cremation followed funeral services on May 25, ashes sent to New Mexico for burial beside her husband. She left Watauga fifty years ago and is survived by ten children, three predeceased. She was raised at Meat Camp and was sister to Jake Lewis and Mrs. L. A. Greene.

Dr. Mary Warfield announces the typhoid and diphtheria vaccination clinic at Blowing Rock will be held Friday instead of Saturday due to her absence from the office on the previously announced day.

Reynolds Leads NC Senate Primary by Nearly 12 000

Robert K. Reynolds surged to a commanding lead in North Carolina's Democratic U S Senate primary, reporting 149 943 votes to Cameron Morrison's 138 376 as Halifax County swung for Reynolds with a 4 000 plus majority. Ehringhaus held a large lead in the gubernatorial race, while A L Fletcher led a concurrent contest with about 49 000 votes from 1 300 precincts reporting. Morrison and Reynolds eyed a possible second primary in July. results await official canvass.

Rats Targeted in Boonetown Poison Campaign for Summer Season

Thousands of rats were killed in Boone and surrounding areas during a bait drive from June 2 to 4 led by the U S Biological Survey. Three hundred fifty pounds of meat and fish cereal bait, supervised by A E Oman, could wipe out five to ten thousand rodents if thoroughly eaten. Authorities caution repopulation is possible if premises are not cleaned and fortified.

One Turkey Earns Owner Over Fifty Dollars

Mrs. Marshal of Taylorsville formerly Maude Bowles a Wataugan has a turkey hen that reportedly set a record by laying five batches of eggs hatched under chickens. The offspring were raised and sold for 50.10 dollars and the final setting laid by the turkey failed to incubate.

Mrs G K Mogge Undergoes Appendicitis Operation

Mrs G K Mogge of Boone was taken to Caldwell Hospital Le noir Friday night for an acute attack of appendicitis and Saturday morning underwent an operation from which she is said to be fast recovering.

Enrollment At Appalachian State Teachers College Reaches 642

The registrar, Prof J M Downum, reports 642 students registered by Wednesday noon with a steady rise and larger anticipated total for the week. Enrollment exceeds last year and signals strong summer terms as students arrive from across North Carolina and other states despite economic conditions.

Baby Girl Injured in Automobile Accident

The baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs Raymond Carroll was seriously cut on Saturday afternoon when a car driven by Mrs Carroll left the roadway near the County Home. A gash across the cheek required stitches from flying glass. Mrs Carroll and Mrs Lee Stout, who accompanied her, sustained minor cuts and bruises.

Gymnasium Construction at A. S. T. C.

Footings pour for the new three story brick gymnasium at the college proceed and it is expected to be usable this fall. The 85 by 55 foot building will sit at the eastern end of the athletic field for male students while the current gym is turned over to the women. Work may resume on the Duke Hospital plant around mid month and finish in about sixty days.
