County Sunday School Convention at Stony Fork
Watauga County Sunday School Association announces the county convention will be July 2 and 3 at the Baptist church in Stony Fork. Guest speakers include D W Sims of Raleigh and W J Vaughan of Ashland Kentucky with many local workers taking part. A pennant will be awarded to the Sunday school with the most representatives 16 years or older based on miles traveled.

Captain H W Edmonds of Charlotte, National Guard officer, toured the county to promote the Citizens Military Training Camp at Fort Bragg for men aged 17 to 24. The 30 day, government funded program is a student reserve corps not active duty. Local enlistees include Allen S Adams Albert Farthing and Orville Hagaman. Nearby Elk Park and Newland youths listed as applicants. The camp opens June 15 with applications accepted beforehand. County Superintendent Smith Hagaman can provide blanks and information.

A blaze at the residence of Nicholas Lind, a Charlotte chemist, led firefighters to discover 1 000 gallons of beer a 50 gallon still and many empty containers in the attic. Lind escaped the fire and police were notified.

New Automobile Law Sets Tags, Penalties and Safety Rules
A new automobile law effective July 1 changes license tag timing and pricing, lowers tag cost, and introduces calendar year validity. It allows 45 mph on open roads, requires accident reports to be filed, tightens hit and run penalties, and increases DUI penalties on first and second offenses. Safety rules include danger signals for wagons and cars, headlights not rising more than 42 inches from the road at 75 feet, and official headlight certification. The law preserves right of way on big roads, requires signals, prohibits neutral gear coast downs, and permits local speed controls in dense areas.

Clarence Chamberlain and Charles Levine landed at Tempelhof after a 4,490 mile 44 hour nonstop flight in a Bellanca Columbia. Increased Pensions for Veterans and Widows
The Watauga County clerk of superior court and county pension board report changes in Confederate pension laws passed in 1927. Totally blind or totally disabled veterans now receive 420 dollars yearly. other soldiers get one dollar daily, semi annual. Widows must have married before 1880. class A widows receive 300 dollars, others 100. Legislature allocated 500000 for widows and 900000 for soldiers in 1927 and 500000 and 600000 respectively in 1928. Board meets first Monday in July to advise on reclassification.
