The semi annual county singing was held in Boone on Sunday with hymns sung by classes from various county sections. Hundreds attended to enjoy the music and picnic indoors and out, the day ending with a large orderly crowd remaining in town.
Smith Hagaman of Watauga County announces that ten local boys approved for Fort Bragg encampment are not to report this summer. The government halt in Citizens Military Training Corps due to Roosevelt era forestry work will force trainees to stay home at their own expense if they attempt to go.
Thuthyl McGhinnis, of Bairds Creek, was severely cut in a Sunday afternoon clash with neighbor Hurst Harmon. Harmon allegedly stopped, cursed, then stabbed McGhinnis with a knife. McGhinnis received care from Dr. W. O. Bingham and is recovering. A warrant awaited Harmon’s arrest as of Wednesday morning.
Dave Dishman of Beaver Dam was badly cut in a Saturday night affray allegedly by Guy Stout. Dishman received deep head gashes in Boone where a physician treated him. A warrant for Stout on assault charges was issued but he later was arrested in Blowing Rock for drunken driving and sentenced to four months on the roads. The assault trial status remained uncertain Wednesday morning.
R T Greer and Gurney D Brinkley of the Peoples Bank and Trust Company returned from Raleigh after discussions with State Banking Commissioner Gurney P Hood. He approved a plan to reopen the closed bank. A stockholders meeting was held and committees appointed to push the reorganization. Depositors responded with willingness to support reopening, and officials see no reason it cannot open shortly.
State health officer Dr. James M. Parrot approved Banner Elk sanitation after a visit with Dr. J. T. Burrus. The town adopted the state milk ordinance, opened a new water system funded by an Edgar Tufts Memorial Association well, and named M. M. Melvin sanitary inspector with aide Robert McDaniel. Banner Elk and Lees-McRae College prepared for summer tourism, planning Pinnacle Inn improvements and a June 8 trustees meeting.
W E Moretz and Robert W Pulliam, local attorneys, have formed a partnership for the practice of law. The new firm is named Moretz and Pulliam and has offices in the Blackburn building near the courthouse. Moretz has recently begun a promising practice, while Pulliam returns after serving with the Census Bureau in Washington.
Frank Shores Joe Presnell and Forrest McGhinnis all from Watauga county are out on bond and to stand trial next week in Recorder's Court on larceny charges for stealing wool from Dr. H. B. Perry. The fleece from about seventy five sheep was taken from Valle Crucis farm and traced to an Asheville dealer via Ashe County.
County Superintendent Smith Gamman announces a supply of Watauga County soil surveys issued by the Federal government. Copies are available on call at the office, courtesy of Representative Robert L. Doughton. Supplies are limited and valued for reference.
Lenoir resident John Harshaw, married to Miss Effie Suddreth in Boone, shot himself in the left side near the heart on his honeymoon trip. Doctors said recovery possible. The incident, at a local hotel, followed Harshaw securing a revolver via A H Bush of Standard Oil. Police investigation paused after Harshaw admitted firing the shot. Harshaw, about 65, is known in Watauga and surrounding areas.
James Grayson 22 a night policeman on the Wilkes beat died at Wilkes Hospital from gunshot wounds after confronting two men in a cafe near the Deposit and Savings Bank. Glenn Walsh 24 of Summit and an unnamed youth were arrested. Walsh held for trial and is said to have confessed. Grayson, son of Mr and Mrs J C Grayson, had served two years and was respected in Watauga. Funeral services were conducted at the North Wilkesboro Methodist Church and burial at City Cemetery attended by Boone friends.
An car carrying Mrs. Floyd Eggers and two children with Clay Brown overturned near Blowing Rock at noon Sunday. Mrs. Eggers suffered head and body injuries, a small son broke a leg, a daughter had facial cuts, and Brown endured a crushed shoulder with facial wounds. Passersby fetched aid before the vehicle could be removed.
Miss Belva Grace Sherrill of Boone died at Grace Hospital Banner Elk after acute appendicitis surgery. She was active in the Advent Christian Church and served as secretary in the State Highway office. Survived by her parents four brothers and four sisters, funeral at Advent Church and interment at Pine Grove Advent Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Foltz Jr. of New York City spent the weekend at the Daniel Boone Hotel as part of a Blue Ridge honeymoon trip. They traveled from the Metropolis by air and were accompanied by Judge T. W. Watson and Mrs. Watson, and Jack Pinner of Shawnee. Foltz is the son of the publisher of the New York Herald Tribune.
Raleigh reports Watauga County has received the first of four $2,620 installments for June relief. The Governor's Office of Relief sent checks to county treasurers on June 6, with three more installments to follow as the month passes. North Carolina totals $651,300 for June, about 13 percent less than requested from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and roughly 20 percent below May’s $866,000. Statewide, reports show improved employment, though funding is tighter.
The public school opened Tuesday for a six weeks session with all grades taught. Students who plan to attend are urged to enter at once.
