A Monday electrical storm struck the R L West residence in Poplar Grove injuring nothing but property. A forked lightning bolt split the garage roof damaged the auto and splintered two by fours while the dining room was struck as the family ate. No casualties were reported with damage estimated at a few dollars.
A nostalgic remembrance of worn out linotype matrices ending their twelve year run at The Democrat. The piece laments the truth of printed words while praising their role in smoothing life’s rough edges, recalling presidents, wars, Prohibition, and cultural shifts as the durable type is retired to a junk shop.
Stockholders and depositors met at the bank to plan reopening. A committee will draft a plan for the State Bank Commissioner. R. T. Greer and G. D. Brinkley traveled to Raleigh for this business. No definite opening date given for Peoples Bank or Watauga County Bank. both may open around the same time if no complications arise.

Mr B S Gragg reports a hemlock stump near Johns River in Caldwell County that remains green after being cut before the Civil War. The three foot tall, 18 inch diameter stump has bark forming across the top but has never sprouted and has withstood 65 years of weathering.

The Board of County Commissioners plans to implement Grand Jury recommendations at the spring term. Repairs to the jail sewage system, public toilets, courthouse, and county home proceed, with interior refinishing and fence removal. Citizens are urged to supplyEvergreens, and June 23 set for planting at Boone, funded largely by relief funds to create lasting improvements and provide jobs.
The Loyal Workers of the Piedmont Advent Christian Conference announce a rally at Boone Advent Christian Church from June 2 to 4. Rev. J. T. Greene schedules 2:00 registration and 8:00 nightly messages by visiting ministers, with sermons and lectures by Rev. Clarence L. Kirby of Saluda, S C, each night. Public attendance urged.
A Boston paper details the May 18 wedding of Isobel Sherburne and Aaron Sanders Harris. The ceremony at the Sherburne home featured Isobel in a bouquet of white roses and lilies of the valley, with her sister as matron of honor and Sherburne as best man. The couple left for New York then Boone, North Carolina, after a reception, with Rev. C. C. Garland officiating.
Claude Norris returns from a two week Roanoke visit. Epsie Greene and Flossie Moody visit Greene brothers B. B. and C. C. Greene. Roby Brown shows gradual health improvement. Rich Whittington and daughter from Wilkesboro visit Barnes family. W W Norris and son of Aberdeen visit Greene and Stanberry. Claude Triplett of Lenoir visits Boone Route 2 residents.
In New York City the trade members advocate a professional shift by adopting the term sanitary engineers appealing to public health and technical flair within the plumbing profession.
A long standing feud between Jim Eggers and Arlie Norris culminated in a deadly knife confrontation Saturday morning. Eggers died from internal hemorrhage while Norris suffered a fatal thigh wound. Coroner Dr. J B Hagaman ruled the cause of Norris’s death. Funeral services were held for both men, ages about 50 and 33, who were respected Beaver Dam farmers with large families.
A severe rainstorm swept western Watauga County Tuesday causing heavy crop losses in Laurel Creek, Cove Creek, and Beaver Dam townships. Tomatoes onions potatoes and corn were inundated or buried in muck while roads and a new Laurel Creek highway suffered washouts. Telephone lines remained down into three townships with no damage estimate yet. residents call it the worst storm in living memory.
Boone High School under Principal E. S. Christenbury will run a summer term for students with scholastic deficiencies. Registration is Monday June 5 from 9 to 10 am. Classes start Tuesday 8 am with two hours daily for each half unit. Tuition ranges from 3 to 5 dollars depending on units.
Fifteen berry growers in Claremont Catawba County formed a selling association and sold over 1000 dollars worth of berries in the third week of operation. The fruit is in demand for high quality and good pack.
Joe Goodnight of Boone North Carolina will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree at Berea College commencement on Monday morning June 5. He transferred to Berea from Appalachian State College after two years there and studied agriculture while active in Alpha Zeta, Agriculture and Home Economics clubs and the Y M C A. He has served as president of the Agriculture and Home Economics Club for the past year.
President Roosevelt’s home state backs repeal with about 11 to 1 vote against the 18th amendment. New York elected 150 delegates to a convention to consider ratification. Final tallies show For repeal 1,907,942 and Against repeal 229,822 as Albany set June 27 for the convention.
Dean J D Rankin says summer school starts next Tuesday with six week terms and no longer requires tutor attendance. He cites teacher interest and economical mountain training drawing about 800 to 1000 previously, with 1100 during the spring term, and outlines a second six week term starting July 17.
Raleigh A. L. Fletcher dispatches a bulletin to North Carolina manufacturers detailing three 1933 labor law provisions. It covers posting requirements inspection access grading from July 1 1933 and the format of inspector reports and certificates to reward Grade A mills.
The May 27 pie supper in Blowing Rock and Boone supported a local baseball team. Gratitude goes to A Cory for the station building and ten gallons of ice cream from Winston-Salem. William Pierce of Weldon plans 72 acres of wheat for his plantation and has stored meat for the year.
