Interested parties should visit his office in the Watauga County Bank building to get full information and he will assist with filling out the forms.
Gunnery Sergeant Thomas J. Jones of Alleghany wins the Marine Corps Cup for the third consecutive year in a rifle match at Hongkew near Shanghai China. A longtime marksman, he set a world record in 1921 with 138 consecutive bullseyes at 300 yards in Wakfield Massachusetts.
Banner Elk is set to award diplomas to 51 students from Lees-McRae College and its high school, the largest graduating class in the school's history. Commencement was postponed due to scattered students but coursework was completed by correspondence. Two Watauga girls and two Sugar Grove students are among the graduates.
The Democrat adopts a new typeface named Ideal News designed by Intertype Corporation to improve readability and reduce eye strain. Optometrists endorse the change and publishers expect readers to enjoy the refreshed columns, while older ads remain in the previous lettering.
Watauga County Bank officials came back from Raleigh after talks with the Banking Commission. They report progress toward reopening the county's closed banks. Commissioner Hood urges rapid renewal of notes to speed reorganization amid slow debt payments and renewals.
Only two cases were disposed of in Recorders Court Tuesday. Arlie W. Brown’s worthless check case was dismissed after it was shown the payee understood the check was not valid. Calvin Ragan was sentenced for violation of the prohibition law to the Eastern Carolina Reform School, with the term suspended for good behavior.
Last week Boone residents participated in a town clean-up requesting rubbish be placed in convenient spots for city removal. Two city trucks operated part time and much work was done to beautify the town. Attorney W. B. Austin of Jefferson transacted business in Boone on Wednesday.
Elijah Norris of Watauga County died at his home last Thursday from age illness after influenza a year earlier. He was 89 and survived by his widow Mary Norris and five children. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 o clock with Rev. W. C. Payne and local clergy in charge. He served in the 58th North Carolina Infantry during the Civil War, earning a lieutenant’s rank and being wounded five times. His body was buried at the Jont Brown Graveyard amid a large funeral procession with American Legion color escort.
The report recalls a fatal shot in the vicinity of the Daniel Boone Hotel. It describes the burial of three of General Stoneman's men in the city cemetery’s colored section and honors Captain Camp Nimrod Triplett era organizer Mr. Norris for his wartime service, church work, and community contributions.
Lenore Ulric, famed for her eyes and stage presence, plans absolute divorce from actor-husband Sidney Blackmer. The couple, long associated with Blowing Rock area, faced persistent rumors of relationship issues as Ulric was seen leaving Cleveland. Also noted: forester R W Graeber urges farmers to use noncrop lands for timber and other resources.
Next Saturday the American Legion Auxiliary will sell miniature red poppies to aid destitute veterans and their families. Secretary Mrs. Fred Winkler reports funds used for clothing, blankets, coal, hospital bills, and other aid, noting the 1932 year begins with $70.85 spent in the county and a $56.69 bank balance.
Howard B. Hamm 16 of Lansing Ashe County died at Hagaman s Linney Clinic Monday at 2 PM from a gunshot wound in the intestines believed accidental by a boyfriend. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. V. Hamm, born in Lansing. Moretz Funeral Home transported the body. interment expected Tuesday.
Mr. Dave Ray of Perkinsville reports a peewee bird nesting on a tractor wheel then moving with a saw mill to another yard. The mother bird built a second nest on the new wheel, laid eggs, and now raises the hatchlings amid the noise and vibration of the machinery.
