Junior Order Picnic and Watermelon Feast Near Boone
Fifty five members of the Daniel Boone Council J O U A M and their families traveled to Rich Mountain gap ten miles from Boone for a picnic and watermelon feast. Miss Maude Hostetler spoke on the work of the Junior Orphans Home at Lexington, noting care for 250 orphans. The group enjoyed games and mountain views, sang America, and shared supper in a festive outing. Participants included T A Weaver, Arthur Triplett, Wade E Brown, and many others.

Reverend W. E. Poovey dies after illness in Mount Airy
Rev. W. E. Poovey aged 56 longtime presiding elder of the Mt Airy district in the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference died Sunday night at a Mount Airy hospital after a two week battle with abdominal cancer. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Central Methodist Church with interment at Hickory. He was active in civic and fraternal life, served as master of the Mount Airy Masonic lodge and orator of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. He was born near Hickory November 17 1879 and had a 27 year ministry in the Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow Mabel Stroup and two children Maybelle Poovey and Edgar Poovey.

Former Virginia governor Henry C. Stuart died Monday at his Elk Gardens home in Russell County at age 78 after a two week illness. He was a noted horse fancier and livestock grower, with his Watauga County herd sent to his plantation for winter feeding for export.

Watt H. Gragg marshal of the Middle District of North Carolina reported substantial savings in his quarterly and annual expenditures. For the year ending June 30 1933 costs dropped from 186 028 16 to 140 002 38 and the last quarter fell from 46 123 19 to 29 581 88. Savings come from lower witness and juror fees salary cuts and prisoner maintenance reductions.

Thomas Lee Greene, son of Mr. Rufus Greene, won the Smith Motor Sales mileage contest for Ford efficiency, earning an expense-paid trip to the Ford plant in Detroit after driving farther per gallon than many rivals.
