The Cranberry mines rock crushers start Monday to supply stone for paving the Boone Trail Highway link between Boone and New River. Guilford Construction Company holds the contract for 1.9 miles and may begin this week once enough stone arrives. Meanwhile Beaver Dam road sees rapid stone surfacing for five miles and Meat Camp township receives gravel to cover three miles east of Sands post office.

Printer on Watauga's First Paper a Visitor
Mr. Charlie Logan of Welch West Virginia visited The Democrat last week reuniting with R C Rivers after 44 years. They first worked together on The Enterprise Boone's first newspaper during the 1888 campaign when Harrison beat Cleveland. Rivers later became publisher of The Watauga Democrat. Logan, son of the late John F Logan of Jefferson, had long traveled as a salesman and had not set foot on Boone soil since his early newspaper days.

Mitchell veteran attempts suicide in Toc cane
Clarence White, a World War veteran from Bakersville, attempted suicide Tuesday by swallowing iodine after previously eating glass at a relative’s home near Toc cane. A local doctor treated him and he was rushed to Johnson City Hospital, where he regained consciousness and cited being worried and tired of living.

Travels from Texas to Boone on Pocket Change
Fred Hodges 18 son of the late Holland Hodges of Paris Texas arrived in Boone last week for an extended visit with his uncle R R Hodges and other relatives in Watauga. He hitch hiked from the Lone Star State to this city in three days spending only 135 and enjoyed the mountains climate and hospitality of Watauga people He will probably remain here during July.

Hodges Wins Brick Contract for College Gym Project
Boone contractor W B Hodges was awarded the three story brick wall contract for the college gymnasium after seven bids were opened by Engineer R F Coffey. Hodges expects to begin by the 25th and finish brick work in about 45 working days using local labor. The gym spans 112 by 77 feet, will house about 275000 bricks, and aims to be among the state’s finest. Electrical plumbing heating and plastering contracts will follow after wall completion.

Sugar Grove man badly injured in truck crash near Boone
Mr. Olus Mast of Sugar Grove was seriously injured when his motor truck overturned near the John Hodges home west of town while returning from a business trip to Boone. He suffered two broken bones in the right arm and a serious hand cut. He was treated at Dr. Perry’s office in Boone where injuries were dressed. Two other injuries of consequence were reported.

Skeleton found near Odessa Lake linked to educator Sampson
In Estes Park Colorado a trail crew member found a skeleton near Odessa Lake. Park officials identified it as Rev. Thornton R. Sampson a Texas educator and Woodrow Wilson associate, last noted in 1915, with evidence suggesting a fall from the cliff. Haywood County sheep growers pooled 4800 pounds of wool for shipment to Elkin.

The six week term ends Friday at Appalachian State Teachers College and a new group of students arrives for registration for the second term starting next Tuesday. Enrollment this summer is 814, the same as last year, with seven eights of the students being women from six states and 84 counties. College officials praise the work of teacher students and their splendid attitude toward the college.

Mrs Hartley Dies at 97 in Bamboo County
Nancy Hartley died at age 97 in the Bamboo section after illness. Funeral services were held Monday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. R. C. Eggers officiating. She was a longtime Baptist member, widow of John Hartley, with nine of twelve children surviving.

Calvin C. Tucker dies suddenly at 84 in Wa tauga
Calvin C. Tucker 84, a long time Wa tauga resident and Union Army veteran, died suddenly at his Brownwood home Tuesday. Funeral held at Pilot Mountain Baptist Church with Rev. W. M. Winkler officiating. Buried in church cemetery. Survived by widow, daughter Ettie Rominger of Matney, two stepdaughters, sister Maggie Huffman of Norfolk, and other relatives. He served under General Kirk in the Union forces and lived all his life near Watauga. He was a longtime member and benefactor of Pilot Mountain Church.

Gillette dies at 87 inventor of the safety razor
King C. Gillette, the inventor of the safety razor, died at his ranch home at 3 a m. He was 87. His wife Alanta Gaines and son King C. Gillette Jr. were with him. The idea came after a swaying train ride and the first safety razors appeared in 1901. Sales grew from 50 razors in 1901 to 90 000 the next year and to 115 272 539 razors by 1930.
