Men’s Club Organized Here Tuesday Night

Initial steps for a new social Men’s Club were taken at a meeting in Boone at the Critcher Hotel Tuesday. J A Sproles was elected president and Robert W Pulliam named secretary and treasurer. A organizing committee will draft bylaws and a constitution and seek an appropriate name. Cove Creek Happenings Highlights From February Events

Rebecca Taylor represented Sugar Grove at a declamation contest at Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory. The Cove Creek Clarion newspaper debuted under student editors and faculty adviser. A Glee Club concert pleased attendees, led by Louise Wetmore. Home economics students hosted a luncheon for officials. The Cove Creek boys won three basketball games in Caldwell County, defeating Patterson High and two Lenoir students.

Wanted in Davidson County false pretense case and manhunt

Judge Ogelsby ordered a capial for George F. Bingham of Watauga County. Bingham is wanted in Lexington for false pretenses after trading for a store with notes secured by mortgages on land claimed at 34 acres. The deed allegedly described more land than existed and the suspect disappeared after taking stock and fixtures. Coffey, a Lenoir native, is serving a life sentence in Wisconsin for the murder of Hattie Hales Coffey, whom he allegedly married in a bigamous union.

Civitan club banquet links Boone and Abingdon leaders

Virginia citizens from Boone and Abingdon met at the Daniel Boone hotel in a Civitan club banquet with mayors, college presidents, and business leaders from both towns. Speakers extolled citizenship, harmony, and cross state ties, while a prize went to Mrs. J. F. Moore and attendees listed from both communities. News items include judicial pay raise and tax proposal, plus a Texas preacher fined for loud hallelujahs.

Ford Refused Billions For Plant In History Making Offers

Washington lawmakers heard that Ford Motor Co turned down three offers of 1.6 billion dollars for its plant in five years. John W. Prentiss testified that Henry and Edsel Ford rejected the cash proposals. The brokers Hornblower and Weeks allegedly led the high valuations. The case concerns a 1919 sale of minority stock to Henry Ford and tax disputes.

Mitchell Man Donates Deer Herd to North Carolina

Always in Trouble featured at Deep Gap consolidated school

Plays at Cove Creek High School entertain Cran dall actors

Two plays presented Thursday night at Cove Creek High School featured talent from Crandall Tennessee. The first play That Rascal Pat and the second Always in Trouble drew a large audience and were enjoyed by many.

Fire truck aids quick Blowing Rock blaze at Young's Cafe

Blowing Rock's new fire truck was dispatched after a rubbish fire under Young's Cafe floor was spotted by Chief Gene Story. Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze with Engineer Rob Greene driving the truck and Assistant Chief Lloyd Underdown directing efforts.

House Passes Soldier Loans Bill Direct to Veterans

The House approved unanimously a bill allowing direct government loans to World War I veterans on adjusted compensation certificates. Loans will bear 6 percent interest and be administered by the Veterans' Bureau under General Hines.

Interesting Meeting of Watauga Post No 130 American Legion

The Watauga Post No 130 American Legion held a well attended meeting in the old Watauga County Bank hall. The Ladies Auxiliary joined, refreshments were served by A W Smith and Auxiliary members, and plans for a Fourth of July celebration were set in motion.

Deer misreported killed in Triplett community

Corre spondent retracts claim a deer was killed last week and reports the animal remained alive after being seen near the Hayes home. Social visits include Mr and Mrs Walter Watson of Boone visiting in Triplett.
