Banner Elk February 16. Lees-McRae opened the basketball season February 5 with a school game between two teams listing players by name. February 12 the Lees-McRae faculty and Grace Hospital staff defeated the February 5 victors 20 to 14. Eirenean and Philolethean societies at Lees-McRae high school reorganized February 5 with officers elected: Kirenean President Juanita Ciprian and Philolethean President Johnny Sue Freeman.

Women’s Missionary Society Meeting in Blowing Rock
The Women’s Missionary Society met February 9 at 2 30 PM in the Blowing Rock Baptist church. Members studied what a missionary is through Bible study and reports by Ventress Pendley and others. New members from several churches joined, followed by a social hour hosted by Mrs J T Miller with chicken salad ice cream and cake. Next meeting set for March 5 at the church with a later social hour.

F Shipman assistant district manager of the Carolina Motor Club visited Boone last week to start the local branch. Ralph Winkler's garage was named official free emergency road service and information center for members. Theater leases Blowing Rock Mayview for summer shows

Watagua County Road Bills Move Toward Business Like Governance
Representative Coffey introduced two bills in the house aimed at Watagua county. One would replace the county commissioners with a three member road commission and the other would create a county bookkeeper to maintain all financial records and provide monthly balance sheets to the boards. The bookkeeper’s salary would be capped at 125 dollars a month.
