Justice Denies Wayne Negro Killer In Raleigh Electrocution

In Goldsboro on December 11, Larry Newsome, a 60 hour convicted killer, was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the murder of Beulah Tedder, 15, whose throat was cut in a cotton field near here. The trial drew violent crowds. guards fired shots to restore order as Beulah’s father and uncle moved to seize Newsome. Newsome was sent to Raleigh State Prison with National Guard escort.

Maddog scare hits Cove Creek area

In Cove Creek Mr Harve Deal reports a maddog terrorizing his section the day prior. The rabid dog killed nearby dogs and cattle after crossing the creek. Authorities and residents fear the animal’s spread while awaiting official action.

Still Destruction Reported Near Trade Jefferson Highway

North Fork deputy sheriff R. R. Eggers reported capturing a gasoline barrel still near the Trade Jefferson highway last Friday. A large amount of beer was destroyed but no Christmas liquor was found. The owner remains unknown.

Moonshine Plant Raid Ends With Arrests Near Beaver Dam

Deputies H A Hagaman and Grady Hagaman with Ray Wilson raided a Lower Beaver Dam moonshine operation called Christmas Joy. A 50 gallon still, liquor quantity, and destruction were found. One man, Linville Eggers, was arrested after firing at deputies. two others escaped. Eggers faces a $500 bond for a moonshining charge at the next Inglesa Superior Court term.

Holy Cross Mission Holds Annual Roll Call Supper

Valle Crucis December 14 Holy Cross Mission hosted its annual roll call supper at the Valle Crucis School for Girls dining room. About fifty attended despite measles whooping cough and heavy rain. Rev James P Burke organized the event highlighting the year's work with reports from auxiliary groups and a rector’s parish program. The evening featured songs, remarks on church history, and a library gift to the school. The Rev and Mrs Burke plan a Christmas visit to Michigan.

Vance Withdraws Charges Against Judge Hayes

Senator Overman received a telegram from D T Vance of Plumtree requesting withdrawal of charges against Johnson J Hayes for the Middle District judgeship. Vance said charges were in good faith but withdrew after learning district lawyers support Hayes. Overman indicated the charges would be withdrawn with committee permission and that Hayes' confirmation should face no objection.

North Carolina to Complete 900 Miles of Roads in 1928

State highway officials estimate 18.25 million dollars will fund roads and bridges in 1928 with about 900 miles finished. Four hundred miles will be hard surfaced and five hundred dirt. Wilmington plans a 1.25 million dollar bridge across the Cape Fear River to start next year. AbOut 24 million was spent in the current year.
