Savannah December drive offers limited openings for boys ages 17 to 18 to learn drum and trumpet at the Marine Corps Recruiting Office. Applicants must be at least eighth grade, 68 inches tall, with 35 high school graduates aged 18 to 30 sought for general service.
A special American Legion and Auxiliary social meeting is set for Friday night December 15 at 7 30. World War veterans and Legionnaires wives are urged to attend as topics of interest to veterans and families will be discussed and a free meal prepared by the Auxiliary ladies will be served.

Mr Lankford Green and Miss Edith Houck both of the Saxon section were married in Mountain City Tennessee on December 9. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs T E Houck and the groom is the son of Mr and Mrs Bill Greene. The couple have many relatives and friends in Watauga who will hear of their wedding with interest.
J T Miller 50 a former Bank of Blowing Rock cashier and Moose organizer died last Wednesday at Hagaman Linney Clinic hours after being removed from a wreck on the Blowing Rock road three miles from Boone. Miss Helen Underdown Register of Deeds survived with minor injuries. Funeral services were at Blowing Rock Baptist Church with burial in Winkler Cemetery. Surviving are a widow and one daughter.
The Blowing Rock Y P A stages An Old Fashioned Mother at the graded school auditorium on Saturday night December 15 at 7 30. Admission 15 25 cents goes to the church piano. Mrs Dave Mast directs the cast for an evening of entertainment.
Two bushels of silage spoiled in trench silos dug and filled in Macon County this season. Spoilage occurred at the top of one silo where the material was not packed down.
Dr Zebulon V Sherrill 70 a renowned Marion Va physician and Watauga County native died after a brief illness. Funeral held Wednesday at 10 am with interment in Marion cemetery. Survived by his widow also a physician and a brother John Sherrill of Boone.
In Recorders Court before Judge Sudderth on Tuesday Finley Estep faced costs for public drunkenness and 30 days on roads. Forest McGhinnis received a $10 fine plus costs with a 12 month suspended sentence for violation of prohibition laws. Don Dotson had prohibition charges dismissed. Cecil Bumgarner and Bill Bumgarner were fined $10 with costs and 12 months suspended for prohibition violations. Charlie Greene was sentenced to six months on roads for assault with an appeal filed. Wade Stewart was assessed costs for assault.
Tracy Councill, the city’s youngest alderman, named mayor of Boone after J. Frank Moore resigned for health reasons. The vacancy on the board remains unfilled, with the next meeting likely to address it. Councill says he serves as mayor only for the time being and has public approval.
Boone merchants report improved holiday preparations with evergreen windows and Santa displays. Trade is strong and expected to rise as CWA payrolls circulate, prompting shoppers to buy early before stock depletes. The Democrat highlights ads offering savings for holiday shoppers.
The second annual Duke University Day dinner was held at Appalachian State Teachers College in the Lily Dale Home Economics Club dining room. Dr. W Amos Abrams acted as toastmaster and alumni, students, and friends enjoyed a three course meal and program recalling Duke days. Local alumni plan to keep the dinner as an annual event.
Six deputies resigned their badges after disagreeing with a Recorder Court ruling in Forest McGinnis case. McGinnis was fined ten dollars and given a twelve month suspended sentence for possessing whiskey, with costs possibly totaling thirty dollars. Sheriff Howell was unavailable for comment.
The American Legion special committee reports rapid contributions to provide Christmas cheer for county children. Santa will visit Boone at noon on Saturday December 23, with donations collected by Ralph G. Greer, Charlie Stevenson, or C. W. Teal, or left at The Watauga Democrat. Donors include Livingstone Club, Five-to-Five Store, Boone Drug Co, Farmers Hardware, and others with amounts ranging from $1 to $10.

Cove Creek School springs have failed and students face water shortages. a family hauls water long distances as conditions threaten to worsen without rain.
