Fish Hatchery Hearing Set for January

The Rutherwood Fish Hatchery viability is to be discussed again at the Board of Conservation meeting in January. Warden H. Grady Farthing and Director R. Bruce Etheridge report a hearing will be allowed for hatchery supporters. A request for 500 000 rainbow and 500 000 brown trout for hatching is noted, fueling hope the hatchery continues in Rutherwood for an indefinite period.

Death of B G Johnson in North Wilkesboro

Mr B G Johnson about 70 died at his daughter Mrs Lillian Hulet home in North Wilkesboro Sunday night after a long illness. He had a paralysis stroke months earlier and died after funeral services were held in Lenoir. Surviving are widow and three children Mrs Hulet W R Johnson of Brevard and B C Johnson of Lenoir. He was a Caldwell County native and long time ice business figure in Boone after returning from Washington.

Weather Fog Defies Efforts as Scientists Scramble

Washington reports baffled meteorologists as fog persists despite experiments. Two gallons of water spread as tiny droplets over a mile keep ceiling and visibility poor, resisting aggregation and rain. Earlier tests sprayed electrified sand to dissipate fog, but the approach proved impractical, leaving fog undefeated.

Stolen Chrysler Car Burned Near Boone

A Chrysler sedan owned by Dr. J. M. Gaither was stolen from his Boone residence Friday night and found three miles east of Boone on Saturday morning, largely burned. Investigators believe the fire may have been accidental and no clues to the thief have been found.

Burglary Report At Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Store

The Deep Gap Tie and Lumber Company store was entered last Thursday night. A quantity of shotgun ammunition overalls shirts shoes and pants were stolen. No arrests have been made. Entry was gained by breaking the lock.

Building and Loan Distributes Five Thousand in Cash

The Watauga Building and Loan Association mailed two hundred $25 bank checks totaling $5,000 to prepaid stockholders. Secretary W H Gragg praises the company as a rare 100 cent on the dollar stock and a steady dividend payer amid market declines. He urges gifts of installment shares for children this Christmas and notes strong prospects for the 26th series starting January 1. Directors report oversubscriptions and improved installment payments, with an approving insurance commissioner’s report and praise for management.

Tragic Shooting Claims Oak Ridge Farmer Paul A. Young

Paul A. Young, a 35 to 40 year old farmer from the Oak Ridge area, was shot and killed last Saturday after a dispute with neighbor Rush Winfrey. Winfrey is jailed in Greensboro on murder charges. Funeral services were held Monday.

Veterans on CWA Rolls to Lose Pension

Raleigh—Capus M. Waynick, reemployment director, said veterans on Civil Works Administration rolls who obtain a federal job paying more than $50 a month will have their pension cut to $6 a month. He noted Washington’s ruling that civil works payrolls are federal payrolls and thus trigger the pension reduction.

Doughton Pushes Eastern Route for Appalachian Parkway

Rep. Doughton urged routing the Appalachian Parkway eastward from Virginia through Alleghany Ashe Watauga Avery and Mitchell counties to Grandfather Mountain Linville Gorge then into the Smoky Mountain National Park. He asked for the Eastern route as surveys by park service and public roads engineers begin immediately.

Watauga Counts On CWA Payroll Reaching 381 Men

About 330 workers on the CWA program received their checks last Saturday as the local payroll rose to over 3000 dollars. The county quota of 381 men is expected to be completed by week’s end with road crews and school repair projects continuing. Merchants anticipate stronger holiday trade and a robust winter economy due to government funds.

I G Harris of Montgomery County Dies at 70

I G Harris, 70, Montgomery County resident, died after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at Macedonia Methodist Church with three visiting ministers assisting. Surviving are his widow and two children A S Harris of Boone and Mrs T B Andrews of Mount Gilead. He was a Montgomery County native and a respected farmer and community leader.

J L Goodnight rites held after Boone man dies

J L Goodnight 58 of Boone died Friday in Lincolnton after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Palm Tree Methodist Church with Rev J H Brendall in charge. Interment was in Lincoln County. Surviving are his widow seven children and two sisters. He was a local produce buyer and farmer who moved from Lincoln County eight years ago and was a leading Methodist Church figure.

Watauga Industries Aids Blue Ridge Crafts Startup

Watauga Industries begun July 1 under Howard Ford in Penland North Carolina trains local residents in weaving metal work and woodwork to earn income. It funds education and materials, sells finished goods at fair prices, and plans a future workshop house for instruction. Items include towels coverlets scarfs napkin rings and hammered bracelets.

Santa Claus to Arrive On Time Next Saturday

Santa Claus will arrive in Boone at noon with bells on as the American Legion distributes about fifteen hundred gift packages to county children from the Cruther Hotel Christmas tree. Local committees and donors are coordinating the event with numerous contributions totaling at least 365.00 plus additional donations from many individuals and businesses.

Pension rolls in Watauga show only seven veterans still receiving checks this year with four deaths.
