Watauga County trims current school expenses from 103 122 to 99 919 for 1931 32, lowering total operating costs from 153 888 to 107 197. Statewide costs also drop sharply from 50 155 928 in 1928 29 to 32 463 074 for 1931 32 amid reduced debt service and capital outlay.
NC Democrats raised 111269.60 locally and 2000 from National HQ as Franklin D. Roosevelt carried the state by 289000. Four years earlier Hoover led by 62000 with 49621.68 spent. Donors include Heazell Asheville 100 Maxwell Raleigh 130 Bailey 100 Hill Durham 100 Cameron Morrison Charlotte 250 and Gardner 150.
Deputies Clint Norris and Albert Farthing dismantled a 60 gallon copper distillery in Bamboo on Sunday night. The modern plant showed old time liquor making paraphernalia and contained an estimated 2500 gallons of fermenting corn mash. No whiskey was found and the operators fled, leaving lunches behind. Authorities noted insufficient information for warrants.
Boone High School football finished a seven game slate with a 38 to 6 victory over Glen Alpine High. They posted five wins, one tie, one loss, and suffered their only defeat at Mountain City. Coach Pyatte built a strong unit from limited materiel though lacking reserves.
Mrs J D Councill now heads the Red Cross work room in the old courthouse. The group seeks all State cloth cut into patterns for winter preparation. Open 9 AM to 4 PM with comfortable quarters for visiting helpers from out of town.
The annual Christmas Seals sale to fight tuberculosis will begin next week in Watauga County. Local chairman Mrs. Stanley Harris says committees across communities will run the effort, anticipating the usual strong response. further details are expected from the chairman next week.
Matoaka West Virginia peace officer T S J Williams fled to avoid charges of criminal assault on a married Boone woman and shot himself in his home after posting a 1000 bond and learning he must appear December third in Boone. He survived initial surgery but condition remained grave.
Zionville resident General Brown is held on $2 000 bond to appear at the spring term of Superior Court for the shooting death of his father in law Dillon Pennell at his home the day before the November election. The bail hearing before Justice C F Thompson found the shooting possibly in self defence as Pennell allegedly invaded the Brown home in an ugly mood.
R L Baldwin, an experienced orchardist, has taken over the Bob Taylor Orchards sixteen miles east of Boone on Route 60. He moved onto the property last week and plans pruning ahead of the spray season, aiming to raise a profitable, high quality fruit crop. Balwin previously leased Rich Mountain orchards and built a strong reputation. his career spans Canada and western United States.
Julius C. Hubbard of the Wilkes Journal and D. J. Carter of the Carter Printing Company merged the Wilkes Patriot into the Wilkes Journal. Patriot staff will seek other journalism roles. Mountain Herald suspended. Joel McKenzie takes position with Johnson County News editor Barry. N. D. Ward returns home to Avery County after years on the mechanical side of the News.
B Taylor Horton age 84 a Boone area ancestor died at his Unicoi home after a long illness. Funeral held at Unicoi Baptist Church and burial in Horton graveyard Yancey County. Survived by widow by a second marriage and several children including Mrs J J Laughren and Mrs W H Gragg. Horton was a Yancey County native farmer Baptist and Mason and former county commissioner chairman for six years.
Following the November election a list shows the newly elected Justices of the Peace across Watauga County townships. Names include Bald Mountain W H McGuire R P Miller Frank Greer and others across Beaver Dam Blowing Rock Blue Ridge Boone Cove Creek Elk Laurel Creek Meat Camp North Fork Shawneehaw Stony Fork and Watauga. Also notes visitors from Kingsport Tenn and a Lincoln County alfalfa update.
The annual Red Cross Drive closes with incomplete reports showing donations and memberships in line with prior years amid a generally favorable response. Roll call chairman A F E South notes many names have been reported as contributing one dollar, though the list is not final.
County tax collector A D Wilson reports favorable receipts in his first canvass and says taxpayers cooperate with authorities. The paper lists dates for his second round of visits on page eight.
County Game Warden H Grady Farthing announces the Conservation Department has suspended bounties on wildcats crows and hawks. He notes the open season on ruffed grouse ends December 1 and squirrel shooting ends January 1, reminding sportsmen of the changes.
Alfred Adams spoke at the eleventh Future Farmers meeting in Cove Creek High School's Agriculture room last Friday. He traced grain drill progress from 1500 B C to today and the program ended with jokes by Bob Bingham.
The Boone Methodist Church women host their annual bazaar at the Critcher Hotel on Friday December 2. Fancy work sales run from 3 to 10 PM and starting at 6 PM oysters chicken salad pies and cakes will be served. Dignitaries from Lenoir visit Mrs Joe Cooke as Sunday guests.
The elected county slate will take office next Monday with routine work likely. Thomas C. Baird will become sheriff successor to L. M. Farthing, while Austin E. South continues as clerk. Helen Underdown begins another term as register of deeds. Roby T. Greer serves in the House. Re-elected are J. B. Hagaman and Roby Vines. new members Coy Billings and Frank Miller join Eller McNeil. McNeil may be named chairman. several justices of the peace may not qualify.
Marvin Howell 238 prominent Todd youth died at home after an eight year illness. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 30 am at the Methodist church with Rev P L Smith officiating. Interment followed in the family cemetery. Survived by parents six brothers and four sisters from Todd and Mooresville.
Official records show none of the four constitutional amendments passed in the November election in Watauga County. Sheriff and coroner four year term failed 1488 for to 2871 against. Special election amendments failed 1051 for to 2204 against. Widow insurance protection failed 1873 for to 1964 against. Solicitorial districts failed 989 for to 2043 against.
Mr. R. M. Greene reports he repaired many discarded toys for distribution to poor children at Christmas. Demand outstrips supply as he runs short. Community members are urged to donate toys for the Christmas Joy Fund of the Watauga Democrat to accompany new items.
