Hillman Named Director of Teacher Training

Dr. J. E. Hillman of Appalachian Training School will succeed A. T. Allen as supervisor of teacher training for the Department of Education, starting September. Roots and Herbs Find Profitable Niche In Valley

Local notes describe a summer trade in forest herbs led by E. A. Dobbin. Maypops sell for 3 cents a pound, mandrake and Lobelia 10 cents, star grass 35 to 40 cents, and ginseng 14 dollars a pound. Lobelia dominates the harvest as people gather in meadows to dry and market the herb.

Reverend Norman H. Camp of Chicago arrived in Boone and preached the first sermon of a non denomi national revival to a large audience. Daily services are at 3 00 and 8 00 with special music and morning prayer meetings for businessmen at 9 30.

The Cove Creek High School will open at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27. All students should be present for classification and book ordering, and patrons and friends of the school are invited.

Annual Farmers Picnic to be held at Beaver Dams Aug 31

The Watauga County Annual Farmers Picnic will be at Beaver Dam on Friday August 31. Speakers include Congressman R L Doughton and U S Dairy Division's McClain. The program features contests games and a dinner with prizes for the best Irish potatoes. Beaver Dam offers a new schoolhouse near Bethel Church and a large grove to host the crowd.

Training School News Highlights at Boone Campus

The Appalachian Training School hosted a minstrel style concert and chapel readings by Miss Mary W. Edwards. A Boone beat Mabel baseball game ended 8 to 6. Visitors included Ex Governor Edmund Noel and Rev W A Stanbury with talks on Mammoth Cave and local education.
