The Federal Trade Commission disclosed a policy to hold newspapers and magazines equally responsible with advertisers. This move aims to clean up advertising columns of irresponsible papers and push advertising frauds, notably medical quacks, toward radio broadcasting.

Cecil Grayson 26 of North Wilkesboro died Tuesday in Alexandria Virginia while his wife and child survive. His death followed a ruptured appendix. He was buried in North Wilkesboro after his father J C Grayson reached him at the bedside. He had worked in Boone and Watauga and was a grandson of Frank Grayson of Trade Tennessee. Also noted: Pasture cash returns of 48 dollars per acre in a six month grazing season in Guilford Davie Herd Improvement records.

The Johnson County Fair opens its four day run on the 26th with high expectations of strong attendance across three states. The event has operated uninterrupted for nineteen years and remains a major mountain gathering.
Josephus Daniels former Navy secretary and Raleigh News and Observer editor spoke to 550 summer school students and Watauga residents at Northwestern North Carolina college. He urged avoiding standardization that stifles initiative and argued for adaptable curricula and teachers who tailor instruction to individual student talents. He later spoke to the Boone Civitan Club at the Daniel Boone Hotel.
The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary met at the courthouse on August 7 with a large veteran crowd and families. Commander Spencer Miller opened the session as Mr. Liberty of the Charlotte Veterans Bureau explained the new disability aid law, answered questions, then the ladies shared baskets for supper before a late departure.
Raleigh report states North Carolina faces too many automobile accidents. A Doughton, chairman of the State Highway Commission, says the panel will study methods for the 1931 General Assembly. He declines to commit to a driver license or higher patrol.

W J Horton and family from Farrell Pa visit relatives. The Mast and Ragland families from Cleveland Ohio and D H Mast host visitors. C W Vick of South Hill Va spends time with S F Horton. A local joke ends with a quip about cigaret case notches.
Judge A M Stack of Monroe to preside as Watauga Superior Court opens on the first Monday in September. Dockets heavy with minor infractions, jurors drawn for two weeks including John Howell, J F E Farthing, D H Eggers, Dudley Greene, Ralph Andrews and others.
Watauga County announces the bass fishing season opens as anglers prepare. trout season ends September 1 in mountain counties and about 150000 trout will be stocked for the April 15 next year opening. Squirrel hunting starts September 15 and licenses for hunting and fishing are on sale through Warden Grady Farthing with strict enforcement expected.
Arthur Johnson and Chas Lewis of Sherwood move over twenty buildings from the new Boone Deep Gap survey line. Work has lasted more than a week. 23 structures are affected and expected to be removed within sixty days. The State will place the buildings on sites of owners’ choosing near the highway.
Eugene B. Somers a popular young North Wilkesboro businessman died in a local hospital Sunday after an appendicitis operation performed the prior Wednesday He was born February 15 1906 in Wilkesboro and was about 24 years old He was the son of Mrs Charles H Somers and brother of Mrs L R Bingham former Boone resident Somers was widely known in the region.
A three-car pleasure party from Pennsylvania traveled through Wilkes County en route to Blowing Rock and Linville. The group included J B Horton and family, N L St Mast, W J Horton and family, R H Johnson and family, and the Johnsons, with plans to continue to Florida. County agent A G Hendren notes upland corn is dried out but lowland corn should yield a fair crop.
