An industrial survey ranks window cleaning as the most dangerous job in New York. Workers face nearly nine times the accident rate of machinists, with belts breaking or slips causing fatal falls. Pivoting interior framed sash windows could allow cleaning from inside, a costlier but safer option urged for a civilized world.
The Department of Justice in Washington maintains the world’s largest collection of fingerprint records with over 2,100,000 photos of fingermarks from those accused or suspected of crime. Proposals to record every child at school are debated, while many states fail to keep basic birth records.
The article notes that only three or four copies exist of the first movable type book the Gut enberg Bible. The U S now holds the finest example as Congress funded 1 6 million to purchase the Voll Behr collection for the Library of Congress, which hosts the Bible and over 3 000 other early prints. It would cost over 1000 million to duplicate the collection if possible. A thousand years hence people will call these volumes the seeds of our nation and printing’s gift of universal knowledge.
The element radium, valued at $2,000,000 per ounce, now comes exclusively from the Belgian Congo. Discovered in pitchblende in Austria, it was briefly mined in Utah before Africa's rich uranium bed dominated production. The North State Canning Company opened its Boone kraut factory and processed over ten tons of Watauga cabbage in a day. President Frank Miller says this year’s sauerkraut output should hit two million pounds, about a quarter higher than 1929. Eighty acres are under contract, with crops boosted by recent rains, promising a bountiful harvest.
Announcement by the War Department identifies John Edgar Brown Jr. of Boone as West Point appointee through Representative Doughton. Brown, a Oak Ridge Military Academy graduate with high honors, lives with his parents and will study at State Teachers College until Christmas before moving to Washington City for final training ahead of the March entrance exam.
A new modern brick filling station at the eastern end of the pavement by C. D. Coffey and Son of North Wilkesboro opened Saturday. Located at the corner of highways 60 and 17, the site includes a moved Bingham residence and extensive concrete paving. Gasoline pumps of the latest pattern assure no wait. Good Gulf products are sold. A. Mr. Barnett of North Wilkesboro manages the business.
Lees McRae College library in Banner Elk reports rapid growth from 500 books in August 1929 to an expected 4 000 by January 1 1931. Gifts totaling 1 850 volumes have been added and cataloged under Dewey. A larger space is urgently needed as shelves overflow in the bright room.
Messrs. Spainhour and Stainback of Hickory and A. S. Harris of Boone returned Friday from New York with full merchandise for the Spaihour stores. New goods are arriving daily and prices this year are considerably lower than last year. Harris notes optimism among Northern jobbers that the crest of the business depression has been reached.
Mrs C L Steidley the High Point evangelist opened a revival at Henson's Chapel on Cove Creek last Sunday. The series is expected to run until the 31st with strong attendance and noted power described in the sermonizer.
Miss Annie Stanbury and R. Luther Clay united in marriage Monday at 6 pm in the Stanbury residence East Boone. The ceremony was conducted by Dr. W A Stanbury with only immediate family present. The bride, a Greensboro College for Women alumna and Boone Graded School faculty member, is active in church and social life. The groom is agent for the Linville River Railway Company and a longtime Boone resident. They plan a brief wedding trip and will reside in Boone.
Eunice Holt a 23 year old colored convict who worked on Route 60 east of Deep Gap died of pneumonia at the Boone stockade last Wednesday. Convicted of manslaughter in 1925 he had served five years of a fourteen year sentence. Relatives in Graham arranged transport of his body after funds were raised. Holt was described by superiors as a good worker and manageable.
The Boone Worth While Club sponsors a Wayne P. Sewell Producing Company musical comedy at the Demonstration School auditorium on Friday August 22 at 8 pm. The show features a 16 member chorus, a junior chorus of 16, a 15 piece cast and 24 chorus, with Grace Graybear and Reese Harris in leading roles and Frank Hagaman as Levinsky the Jewish producer. Proceeds support a community project.
Blowing Rock Consolidated School will open Monday September 15 with Whiting and Boone Fork districts annexed and bus transport provided. The faculty includes Nye as principal, Tester, Mrs Grady E Tester, Miss Greer, and several grade teachers. Pupils urged to bring or secure second hand books and be present the first day.
At a Boone and Blowing Rock Civitan joint meeting thirty five members pledged moral and financial support to a tuberculosis clinic run by the State Sanatorium for Watauga schools. The six week clinic starts mid September with a nurse provided by the county and funded X-ray plates.
Evangelist Marshall L. Mott of Winston-Salem wraps up a three week union revival in Mocksville joined by Horace Easom as choir director. The event drew hundreds and led to over 300 conversions and 76 church additions across Davie County. Mott continues in Sparta with Boone Baptist Church inviting crowds.
Kenneth Winebarger son of Mr and Mrs Dayton Winebarger of Meat Camp reportedly has thirteen living grandparents and great grandparents, with all relatives residing in Watauga County. The oldest is over ninety, a challenge to genealogists to match.
Howard Walker of Cove Creek High School with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and the USDA schedules demonstrations on copper sulphate drenches for stomach worms in Watauga County. Sessions include August 21 at M. A. Ward's Watauga Falls and several August dates at John Mast N Church's Mable J Banner's Sugar Grove W Y Farthing's Beaver Dam and Lee Carender's Matney. All interested attendees are urged to participate.
Programs arranged for Fifth Sunday gatherings at Prushy Fork and Stony Fork Baptist Churches on August 30 and 31. Rev. Arthur Wilson leads Brushy Fork Saturday night while Sunday offers School, sermon topics, and discussions on what churches gained or lost in twenty years plus prayer needs.
Rev and Mrs John H Morgans of Charleston S C spend a few days in Boone as guests at Critcher Hotel. Morgan class of 1919 ATS later studied at Sewanee earning BA and BDiv He served churches in New Jersey and North Carolina and is rector of St Peters Charleston Mrs Morgan is Caroline Simmon Scott of Kings tree S C The visit marks a reunion with friends who note his success in the ministry.
Miss Bessie Goble presented a graduating piano recital at Appalachian State Teachers College on the 18th assisted by Miss Mildred McDade with readings. The program featured fine music and poetry, guided by teacher Mrs. I G Greer, and closed with a diploma from Dr. J D Rankin.
Miss Lina Fletcher of Lenoir spends the week at the Boone home of her aunt Mrs. Cora Councill.
The Livestock Association of Watauga County met in the courthouse to discuss wintering cattle and sheep. A plan outlined by a Department of Agriculture representative links Western North Carolina cattlemen with Eastern farmers abundant in feed to compensate for drought impacts on Southwestern Virginia markets. Farmers were urged to hold cattle, especially steers and heifers under three years old, to stock next year’s pastures. The department will provide more details in the coming days.

He questions prosperity forecasts, laments Wall Street liquorlez and urges money back into domestic business and credit. Roy Greene and Bernard Dougherty secure the agency for the bantam American Austin car. Two featherweight models arrived last week as boone dealers demonstrate the vehicle. Weighing 1150 pounds, it delivers forty miles per gallon with total operating costs around three quarters of a cent per mile. The Austin’s ease and efficiency draw motor enthusiasts in Boone.
The Advent Christian Church in Boone will host Rev. 8S. E. Gragg in a morning service on Sunday. He will preach from his prophetic chart about Nebuchadnezzar’s dream as described in Daniel chapter two.
