Power Company Adds 300 HP Diesel Engine To Restore Water Power

During drought, Northwest Carolina Utilities faced power cuts on the Watauga River above Shulls Mills. G T Robbins of Blowing Rock secured a 300 horsepower Diesel engine from Baltimore, installed it, and regular 24 hour service resumed for Blowing Rock Skulls Mills Valle Crucis and Cove Creek, ending fear of outages.

McDade Takes Manager Post at Isaacs Department Store

R F McDade has accepted the position of manager at Isaacs Department Store and began last Friday. Owner L S Isaacs, ill, will step back from active duties for rest while the store staff remains unchanged. McDade previously ran Spainhour Store in Boone and is now re established in local trade circles. The ninth annual farmers field day and picnic will be held at Tee Pee Station near Oxford on Thursday, August 7.

Gubernatorial Aspirant Visits Watauga Leader Johnson Seeks Governor Nomination

Judge Tom L. Johnson of Lumberton, a longtime Democrat and former president of the North Carolina Senate, toured Boone and said his name would be in the governor’s race. A public servant born in Leicester, he has chaired Robeson County’s Board of Education, authored the 1925 State Banking Act, led as Senate president, and served on the Superior Court bench since 1929. Supporters in Watauga say he has the credentials to be chief executive.

Supervisor Lida Questions Camp Rumors and Punishments

State Supervisor D R Lida challenged a Democrat article alleging harsh conditions at the convict camp near Deep Gap Route 60. He denied whipping prisoners, said only solitary confinement on limited rations is allowed, and labeled reports of hand-strapping false. He noted guards Freeman and Gosnell were bailed by another worker, not returned to guard duties, and blamed a discharged guard for spreading stories.

Boone Man to Apply for Commercial Pilot's License

Horton Gragg of Boone plans to study aero nautics in North Wilkesboro under Pilot Ed Newkirk, then fly to Charlotte to log hours.
