Today and Tomorrow travelers tout Portugal as the most honest country on earth where doors are left unlocked and belongings undisturbed. They praise polite hospitality and shelter from sudden rain. Yet they note the nation’s politics under General Carmona, with twenty six years and twenty solutions under its current president.
Early Census reports show birthrate drops greater than before. In ten years annual population gains may fall to 500 000 or less than one half percent. Impacts include slower city growth fewer schools and homes, higher elderly shares, and aging pensions becoming urgent policy concerns.

G T Robbins of Blowing Rock secured a 300 horsepower Diesel engine from Baltimore, installed it, and regular 24 hour service resumed for Blowing Rock Skulls Mills Valle Crucis and Cove Creek, ending fear of outages.
Mr Liberty of the U S Veterans Bureau will speak at Boone courthouse on Thursday evening August 7 at 7 30 p m about filing disability or pension under the new law. Ex service men urged to attend with wives or sweethearts, bring lunch for an evening of enjoyment and music. American Legion Auxiliary members and prospective officers to be elected after lunch.
Regional editors from Watauga visit Boone as part of the North Carolina Press Association gathering. Reports highlight mountain hospitality, a Grand Boone dinner, and a preferred tour along the Yonahlossee Trail from Blowing Rock to Boone with visits to Linville Banner Elk and Valle Crucis.
Hon R L Doughton veteran Eighth District Congressman will deliver the first political address of the year at noon on September 1 during Superior Court. Local leaders expect a large crowd as he starts the political pot simmering amid talk of a possible bid for the U S Senate in 1932, though no definite information confirms such ambitions.

R F McDade has accepted the position of manager at Isaacs Department Store and began last Friday. Owner L S Isaacs, ill, will step back from active duties for rest while the store staff remains unchanged. McDade previously ran Spainhour Store in Boone and is now re established in local trade circles. The ninth annual farmers field day and picnic will be held at Tee Pee Station near Oxford on Thursday, August 7.
Judge Tom L. Johnson of Lumberton, a longtime Democrat and former president of the North Carolina Senate, toured Boone and said his name would be in the governor’s race. A public servant born in Leicester, he has chaired Robeson County’s Board of Education, authored the 1925 State Banking Act, led as Senate president, and served on the Superior Court bench since 1929. Supporters in Watauga say he has the credentials to be chief executive.
Winston-Salem evangelist arshall L Mott Jr will open a revival series at Boone Baptist Church on Sunday September 7 according to a letter to Pastor Rev P A Hicks The change from September 21 to September 7 fits his schedule He is noted as a leading pulpit orator and is conducting a revival in Mocksville with large crowds and high interest Rev Hicks urges Watauga residents to attend and promises his forceful sermons
Captain William Smith of the American Church army leads a three week Episcopal mission at Valle Crucis Episcopal Church. Special preachers include Rev. Rufus Morgan next Sunday, Bishop K G Finley on the 17th, and Rev Henry B Phillips on the 24th. Other visiting clergymen oversee August missions in Ashe County Blowing Rock Linville and Newark Ohio.
State Supervisor D R Lida challenged a Democrat article alleging harsh conditions at the convict camp near Deep Gap Route 60. He denied whipping prisoners, said only solitary confinement on limited rations is allowed, and labeled reports of hand-strapping false. He noted guards Freeman and Gosnell were bailed by another worker, not returned to guard duties, and blamed a discharged guard for spreading stories.
Hon Josephus Daniels editor of the Raleigh News and Observer, staying with Mrs Daniels at the Blowing Rock Hotel, will deliver an address in the College Auditorium this Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. The public is invited and many town and county residents are expected to attend.
Horton Gragg of Boone plans to study aero nautics in North Wilkesboro under Pilot Ed Newkirk, then fly to Charlotte to log hours. He aims to take the commercial pilot license exam early September and hopes to become the county's first full-fledged aviator before entering U S Army Air Corps after schooling.
Elder R. L. Isbell of Lenoir will speak on his Holy Land trip at Howard's Creek Baptist Church Saturday night August 9 at 8 o'clock. The noted speaker, acclaimed for travel lectures, will also preach at Advent Church in Boone next Sunday in morning and evening services.
