Death of Mr. Corpening Owner of Watauga Hotel
Mr Newton Corpening of Missouri died July 19 after months of poor health. A well known figure in North Carolina he owned the Watauga Hotel the first hotel at Blowing Rock. Survived by his second wife Callie Winkler of Boone and a son. Previously married to Miss Moore of Globe.

Clemenceau Says France Is Not For Sale
Paris Aug 8 Georges Clemenceau former wartime premier appeals to President Coolidge not to treat war debts as a purely commercial matter. He says the Berenger Mell on deal is impossible and would imperil France independence. He warns that France will not accept a loan secured by territorial possessions. President Coolidge replies that war debt negotiations are closed and relations with France will be conducted through diplomatic channels.

Young Man Slays Mother in Mutilation Rampage
Springfield reports 26 year old Richard C. Bearse, a mechanical engineer, killed his mother in a brutal attack and then sat beside her mutilated body muttering about purifying her soul. Police seek motive as he appeared a gibbering idiot. In Buffalo five men aged 20 to 30 died when their auto collided with the Ohio Limited near Williamsville.

Arlie Williams Killed After Vilas Car Crash
Arlie Williams age 21, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Williams formerly of this county now residing in Detroit, died two hours after an automobile wreck at Vilas. He lost control, the car turned over, and a rib pierced a lung. He was buried at Cove Creek.

Howard F Councill Lays Rest in Hickory
Lieutenant Howard Folk Councill eldest son of Judge W B Councill and Mrs Councill died in a Vineyard Haven Massachusetts plane crash. The Church of the Ascension in Hickory hosted his funeral with military and American Legion escorts and pallbearers who were his boyhood friends. He was interred beside Allan Councill, his younger brother, with floral tributes from across the country.

Atlanta reports Louis H. Crawford says corsets containing twelve pint bottles of corn liquor were worn by women at a Savannah festival. Crawford, U S marshal for the northern district of Georgia, discussed the find after returning from Savannah where he met with M. O. Dunning, prohibition co ordinator for the southeast. The corsets were worn as stays at a picnic hosted by Savannah Negroes.

State to Take Over Ashe Johnson Highway Requested
Citizens of Ashe county and a Johnson county Tennessee delegation met Highway Commissioner A S Hanes at Roaring Gap to urge state takeover of the Jefferson to Tennessee line road near Trade. Hanes said current mileage is 6200 miles but could rise to 8000 miles next session and he would support placing the road on the map if approved.
