Boone readers will witness the opening of the Advent Christian Church in a new stone building with Sunday School at 10 am led by Elder Chas G Hodges and five teachers. Elder J A Downs will preach at 11 am followed by an all day service with a picnic meal and 2:30 pm sermon by Elder R N Baldwin titled Baking God’s Cake First.

Miners Rescued After 153 Hours Imprisonment
Five miners were trapped for 153 hours in the Hudson Zine and Spar mine near Salem Kentucky. They endured food and water shortages and prayed for salvation as a wall collapse blocked their exit. One miner persisted until rescue and emerged with a hopeful message about being saved.

Death of Wiley Howell Leaves Community Grieving
Wiley Howell aged 79 died after a lingering illness last Friday. He lived near the Ashe Watauga line and was a longtime Baptist. Interment was at Todd cemetery. He was father of W N Howell on the county commission and grandfather of A Y Howell and Prof Vance Howell. He never complained and died peacefully. He leaves many relatives and friends.

Legion Fiddlers Convention Planned at Court House
The American Legion post in Watauga will host a fiddlers convention at the courthouse on Friday night August 20 under its auspices. David Anderson thirty three of North Wilkesboro was instantly killed by a lightning bolt on Blowing Rock Sunday morning. Three Brestwood boys aged thirteen eleven and eight were injured and taken to Lenoir hospital.

Rainbow Trout Now Available At Boone Hatchery
The Democrat reports J. K. Dixon, Chairman of the Department of Fisheries, says the commission will soon distribute 70,000 rainbow trout fingerlings at the Boone hatchery. Fish from Michigan wild stocks are said to be stronger and thriftier, and Watauga residents are urged to file applications promptly with the commission or Democrat office.

Whittmore Hanged for Murder of Penitentiary Guard
Maryland penitentiary in Baltimore reports Richard Reese Whittmore, leader of a so called million dollar crime trust, hanged at 12 06 am for the murder 18 months earlier of guard Robert Holtman.
