Lieutenant Howard Councill dies in Vineyard Haven crash

Lieutenant Howard Folk Councill of Hickory native of Wa yard Haven Mass and a naval seaplane crewman perished when the amphibian aircraft plunged into Vineyard Haven harbor. Mechanic C T Giddens of Georgia also died. The plane left Washington for Chatham and then crashed during a later flight to Newport News. engine trouble is blamed. Funeral plans set for Church of the Ascension Hickory with burial beside his younger brother Allan Councill.

Five Girls Die In Grade Crossing Crash Near Gastonia

Five girls from Bessemer City, aged 15 to 20, died when Southern train No 45 struck a light truck at Gamble's crossing between Gastonia and Bessemer City. A sixth occupant, Ida Bess, 17, was seriously injured. The accident occurred about 6 pm Sunday. the truck was demolished and bodies lay along the track.

Watauga County Settles Audit Dispute with Firm

The Watauga County case against R. Emmet Smith & Company of Asheville over unreturned books has been compromised. County Attorneys Brown and Bingham and F. A. Linney arranged terms based on auditing fiscal year 1926. The total audit cost from 1921 to about $11,000.

New Auto Tags Notify Grace Period Expired

Motorists are told the grace period for yellow 1925 26 license tags ended Tuesday and driving with old tags risks a misdemeanor arrest. Old licenses were out of date July 1. No penalty for late tag purchase. license must be valid. July tag sales reached about 4 097 000 dollars, below last year's figure despite thousands sold recently.
