A Boone area tenant farmer is charged with beating a six year old boy entrusted to care by the welfare department. Evidence includes welts and gashes and dogwood sprouts. The justice bound the defendant over to Recorder's Court on a $100 bond, with readers urging stricter punishment.

About one hundred fifty teachers and principals from Watauga Caldwell Ashe and Alleghany counties gathered at Appalachian State Teachers College auditorium on Monday for conferences led by State Board of Education members. Dr Highsmith Miss McDougal and Miss Douglas spoke on school law libraries and plans of work. Lunch funded by the college. Dr Dougherty outlined the State School Commission salary schedule, to be in workable form by the fifteenth.

Mrs D S Love of Vilas who suffered a stroke on July 8 is recovering and able to talk again. Her husband reports the illness was unusual as she prepared breakfast and went about farm duties before losing speech, then returning to near full vocal use after gradual improvement.
Ed F. Sherwood was appointed temporary postmaster at Vilas NC and will start work soon. He plans to keep current quarters briefly and build modern offices later after permanent appointment. He succeeds Vance Pensell, a popular local figure. H C Jones is noted as emergency agent for the city as gardens yield surplus vegetables.
The Piedmont Advent Christian Conference will hold its fifty-fifth annual session August 24 and 25 on Yonahlessee Road near Blowing Rock, paired with a weeklong Advent Christian Camp Meeting at 4000 foot Blue Ridge altitude. President Charles J. Preslar urges full church delegations as noted preachers, hymns, and revival are planned with modest meals and lodging options for attendees.
Miss Lucile Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs W F Miller of Boone and a two week veteran teacher in a high school near Concord was seriously injured Friday night when a car carrying teachers collided with a parked vehicle. She sustained a deep chin gash and loss of teeth along with cuts bruises and a shaken nervous system and remains in Mooresville hospital showing improvement. Doctors expect possible return home by week end and may restore teeth and allow her to resume teaching in two to three weeks.
Mr J P Hoyt aged 58 and a former Boone resident died Monday morning at a brother's home in Johnson South Carolina from an incurable illness. He had a recent operation in Columbia and was known locally for work at the Boone Department Store before leaving last spring due to illness.
Suddreth clan executive committee met at W. Clyde Sud dreth's home in Lenoir to plan a reunion on September 10 at John Suddreth's home one mile west of Lenoir on Highway 18. Dr A A Kent and Dr C E Rozzelle will speak and attendees from Watauga are urged to attend.
The American Legion fiddlers convention drew over 500 attendees from Wa iuga and nearby counties. Performers from Trade and Mountain City Tennessee entertained as U S Marshal Watt Gragg oversaw MC duties and a lively, hour long show extended past eleven.
A revival at Boone Baptist Church began Sunday at 11 attending sermons by Rev B E Morris of Statesville assisting Pastor P A Hicks. Z M Freeman of Statesville leads the music with Frances Freeman at the piano and young peoples activities. Services are at 3 and 8 pm daily with emphasis on school children attendance. Crowds from across the county attend as plans continue through next week.
Sheriff Howell and deputies raid Meat Camp community after seizing a miniature distillery built from a five gallon milk can with a gallon bucket cap. A barrel of beer sits on site. no spirits found, but the setup suggests ongoing operation.
Early Tuesday twenty five Boone bound cars carried seventy five Avery County residents to Newland to form a venire for the Glenn Welch jury in the Wilkes County court. Welch is accused in the slaying of Policeman James Grayson on May 31st. Defense attorney J E Holfhouser of Boone argued at the venire draw Friday. The case draws intense local interest across Watauga and nearby Tennessee communities.
A modern library building will be built at Appalachian State Teachers College within days. The brick three story structure measures 128 feet by 58 feet and will house about 35 000 bricks with modern heating and plumbing. Local labor will do the work under Engineer Robert Coffey with brickwork by W B Hodges and James Carter. Occupancy is expected by December first. the former library occupied the Watauga Academy building.
The Watauga County All Stars defeated a Henderson County squad 4 to 3 at Hendersonville Tuesday. Henry Greene pitched seven scoreless innings before relief, Coker Triplett homered and doubled, and Jackson homered for Henderson. Return game set for Boone next Tuesday at 2 30 p m with gate fees to offset visitor expenses.
Watauga County and Raleigh district officials announce state allotments for next year. White high schools receive 24 teachers and elementary 92, plus 3 for colored elementary schools, totaling 116 pending adjustments.
