In Port Arthur Texas a gasoline tanker Gulf of Venezuela exploded while docked with 85 000 barrels of high test gasoline aboard. Twenty five seamen were burned to death and eleven others were injured in the blast. Captain John Charlton slept forward as the tanker burned shedding a 100 foot flame column. Firefighters recovered only ashes from the wreckage after the blaze was damped.

Mrs. T. M. Greer formerly Addie Belle Huff of Dorchester Nebraska died in Charlotte after an operation. She taught at Deep Gap Consolidated School and resided in Boone for two years. Survived by husband Milton Greer three children and her Nebraska and North Carolina kin. Funeral held at Baptist Church with brief services due to rain. Burial in city cemetery.
Washington April 14 A bill introduced in the house by Rep H W Temple PA Republican seeks as first two extensive eastern national parks Shenandoah in Virginia and the Smoky Mountains on the NC TN boundary. The two parks would total about 2000 square miles with Smoky Mountains around 1100 and Shenandoah about 900.
Jefferson correspondent reports George Stike of Bina has two sons in jail charged with homicide. Guy Stike is jailed in Beckley West Virginia for the killing of J Lillard Price of Lansing. The body with a head wound arrived in Lansing after noon. Cicero Stike faces a Florida arrest for killing a co worker on a construction job. The younger Stike plans to plead self defense. The weapon cited is a shovel.
Assistant Attorney General Frank Nash advised the Pabst Corporation of Milwaukee to drop North Carolina from its beer sales drive or risk a supreme court test case. Nash said the state prohibition law would bar the sale of 3.75 beer in North Carolina.
Edward W. Browning a wealthy New York real estate operator, 51, marries Francis Peaches Heenan, 15, in Cold Springs New York. The couple’s wedding follows Browning’s earlier marriage and the ceremony was attended by local guests.

Engineers from the state highway commission began surveying the new city street in Boone after rain delays. J A Templeton leads a surveying crew while Weeks and Shell operate a steam shovel in front of E S Coffey property. The Foster Company handles grading with Cranberry Furnace supplying 800 cars of stone for the concrete base. Commissioner Hanes estimates 22 days for concrete work if weather stays favorable. Water connections are complete and paving should start soon.
The March report from the state auditor and state treasurer indicates a surplus of 3,217,386.04 after starting with a 1,238,087.15 overdraft. Receipts totaled 5,516,450.33 while expenditures reached 1,060,977.14, leaving a strong general fund balance. This should allow safe operation through April to June amid upcoming tax collections.
