Raleigh reports the House accepted a 16 million eight months school bill and backs a 3 percent general sales tax to fund state needs. Debate over the sales tax continues while several measures were ratified or amended, including banking and beer sale regulations, with page seven continuing coverage.
C. W. Teal, a local businessman, is named president of the Watauga Baseball League at a meeting in Boone. Six county clubs attend as a board of control will draft rules. each club must post a $10 forfeitable deposit for season commitment. Seven clubs have joined with eight hoped. Oak Grove Bamboo Elk Vilas Blowing Rock Mabel Boone listed. A follow up meeting is set for Thursday at 8 PM in the Boone Department Store to finalize details and require representation.
County Tax Supervisor J. S. Mc Bride notes low response to the list taking and cites penalties for non listing. A $2 penalty may be imposed and evaders face prosecution, with fines up to 10 percent. Property must be listed as of April 1, with May 1 as the deadline. Mc Bride is in Boone this week overseeing the list taking.
Sugar Grove resident Andy Greer hosted a Sunday old fashioned country dinner for Boone friends using Watauga County products. Roast pork biscuits honey preserves and raspberries highlighted the meal enjoyed under shade trees while each guest received a hand carved walking cane. Attendees included Carrol Adams John Greer John W Hodges W R Lovill and Cicero Greer. The Democrat editor RSVP’d but could not attend. The piece notes rising jigsaw puzzle production.
A bill by Rep. F. H. Coffey in Raleigh proposes creating the Daniel Boone National Forest Park spanning about 240000 acres across Madison Mitchell Yancey Buncombe McDowell Burke Caldwell Avery Watauga Ashe Surry and Wilkes counties The plan envisions federal administration for reforestation recreation hunting and fishing with restrictions on timbering mining and grazing and calls for cooperation with state and private lands to form a large park forest area in northwestern North Carolina.
A meeting of Watauga County Bank stockholders approved reorganizing the bank with new capital from existing stockholders and depositors. Non assessable common stock will be issued in proportion to contributions. Depositors will vote in sections this week. 75 percent backing triggers actual reorganization. State Bank Commissioner Hood praised the plan saying it should weather financial storms.
In Raleigh the House discusses two omnibus bills to create county boards of education and pay the first five members from state funds. The measure limits terms, preserves existing members, and awaits amendments. A second bill names justices of the peace for six years with a tiered election and appointment plan. Watauga County lists are given for boards and justices, while a note recalls New York hotel counts in 1905.
General Brown faces a double claim of self defense and murder as he stands trial in Superior Court for the fatal shooting of his father-in-law, Dillon Pennell, last November. State witnesses question provocation while Brown’s defense asserts prior threats. more testimonies are expected as proceedings continue.
County Game Warden H Grady Farthing says streams are in excellent condition for angling as the trout season begins next Saturday. No changes to state hunting and fishing laws in Watauga. Residents pay 1.10 for county licenses, 2.10 for out of county, non residents 5.10. Department of Conservation urges license purchases before fishing to avoid court costs.
The General Assembly ratified a bill fixing court terms in Avery Mitchell Watauga and Alexander counties. House committees reported favorably on two Watauga County measures, one to allow abolishing the Recorder's Court and another to adjust boundary lines between Blowing Rock and Watauga townships. The boundary action was sent back to committee after requests to hear affected residents.
