Expert English tailor to design our uniforms

Quartermaster General Humphrey arranged for George B. Winter, renowned English military tailor, to sail to the United States this week to design uniforms for enlisted men. Winter will provide patterns for eight garments in eighteen sizes, spend two weeks in Philadelphia instructing American tailors in building snappy uniforms, and fit eighteen sizes for two overcoats, a service coat with breeches, and a khaki coat with breeches, aiming to solve fit and style complaints and reduce American officers buying European outfits. Winter heads Stohwasser & Winter, previously supplying Cuban and Philippine campaigns, after Capt J Bentley Mott recommended adoption of the English cutter. An army officer quoted praises the English cut for better fitting clothes, noting American uniforms are frequently disliked and that English tailors provide the best solution for proper fit.
