John Joseph Kean a New York man and embezzler abducted seven year old Freddie Muth from Muhlenburg School. He held the boy in three vacant West Philadelphia houses and exchanged five coded letters with the boy’s father seeking money. A baker’s tip and handwriting matches led police to Kean’s lair, where he surrendered after being fired upon. Freddie was recovered unharmed.
