Edward Guerin recounts his perilous escape from Devils Island using a river route down the Maroni with companions. He describes brutal sun glare, thirst, sharks, and stealthy travel through forests and swamps, facing the threat of pursuit and imprisonment as they sought a safe return to the mainland and possible penitentiary.
The accounts describe a perilous voyage in a damaged canoe with a leaky hull and a crew of two. After enduring sun fever and thirst, sharks, and treacherous swamp, they reach a river and encounter hostile savages who rob them of food and money before marooning them. They are rescued by Tadian villagers and eventually reach a port, with one companion behind in England seeking reunion with a love interest.
