Aged Alabama Senator Pettus dies in North Carolina shortly after a fatal apoplexy stroke at table. Daughter and grandson reached bedside an hour before his end. he celebrated his eighty third birthday last week. A famed Confederate soldier, eminent as lawyer and statesman, known for long public service.
The Atlanta New York Express derailed near Oak Ridge Virginia after a switch failure. Engineer W Millard of Washington and Foreman Wick Clarke of Alexandria were killed. Eleven others injured as the wreck scattered cars and damaged track. Relatives and officials arrived from Alexandria to assist and identify the dead.
