Parents Under Arrest In Maryland Abandonment Case

Naval Institute Awards Gold Medal Won by Commander Rittenhouse

The Naval Institute in Annapolis announced annual awards for best naval papers. Commander H C Rittenhouse won the Gold Medal and life membership plus 200 dollars for the paper Promotion by Selection. Man killed infant and wife in Ridgely shooting

William Woodrow was convicted at Keyser West Virginia of shooting his wife and killing their infant in her arms in Ridgely near Cumberland after a drinking bout. He received five years in the penitentiary. a prior trial had yielded eight years. The Supreme Court ordered a new trial previously believing his wife’s testimony led to the conviction.

Funeral for Gen Wheeler Held in New York

Funeral services for Brig. Gen. Joseph Wheeler will be held at St Thomas Episcopal Church in New York on Sunday before his body is taken to Washington for burial. An escort from the Engineer Corps cavalry and artillery units will accompany the procession from New York to Washington. Arlington Urged for Gen Wheeler Burial by Confed Veterans

John T Callaghan, president of the Confederate Veterans Association of Washington, urges that Gen Joseph Wheeler be buried in the Confederate section at Arlington rather than elsewhere. Appeal Stays Hangings in Berwind Crew Murders

Arthur Adams and Robert Sawyer, two Negro sailors, convicted in Wilmington for the murder of five of the Berry A Berwind's crew, had their January 26 execution stayed by the United States Supreme Court while they appeal. Henry Scott, the chief witness against them, was respited. An appeal date may be set for April. An uncle from Philadelphia is funding the fight for Adams.

Plan of Punishing Castro Declared in Paris

Paris January 26 news reports that President Loubet presided over a ministerial council at the Elysee where a decision was said to be reached on France's eventual action toward Venezuela. Washington is said to have approved the measures, though details were not released.
