Death at Yale area shocks New Haven society

Tornado wrecks Albany Georgia injures many

A tornado struck Albany on January 3 at 1 30 pm from the southeast, tearing through about a dozen blocks. Known dead include Ben Jones and Jake Johnson, with several others likely to die. Injured and homeless residents flood shelters as property losses rise, notably at the Virginia Carolina Chemical Company and the Southern Bell Telephone Company.

A freight wreck on the Southern Railroad near Fair Forest South Carolina at 11 o'clock today left engineer J A Lucas of Greenville and a colored fireman dead The wreck blocked the track and caused several crew members to be fatally injured Detours for northbound trains via Columbia delayed operations six to seven hours. a washout is suspected.

Fire Captain Lost Life in Springfield Blaze

In Springfield Massachusetts Capt Stiney Bowers of the fire department was killed and firefighter Frank L Hines seriously injured in an incendiary fire that destroyed the Highland Baptist Church. The blaze began in an adjoining barn with prior arson attempts in the last two months. Firemen pulled out three colleagues but could not reach Bowers as the roof collapsed. The church valued at about $40000.

Japanese steamer reports Siberia captain suicide

Victoria January 3 The Evapress from Hongkong brought news that Capt J Tremain Smith master of the Siberia died by his own hand. A Chinese cabin boy found him with his throat cut in the captain’s cabin on December 7. Investigators say he chose death during the voyage from San Francisco. A blood stained razor lay beside the body which was taken to San Francisco for burial.

Waves Too Big to Face on Atlantic Liner

The Statendam turned back from an America bound voyage to Europe on December 26 due to enormous waves. It spent five hours fighting seas, with six inches of water in steerage cabins, doors smashed, and deck fixings ripped up. New York report states Marie Arcangelo Dolia, 23, was shot by her brother-in-law Joseph Vanea at her Jersey City home. Gallinger Peril Throws Him to Ground in Street Car Accident

Senator Gallinger and his wife Mrs. Gallinger were struck by a Connecticut avenue street car at H and Fifteenth streets. He leaped to save her, both were injured but survived. P. J. Thistlewood Aground Off Pensacola In Gale

The P. J. Thistlewood, a Tampa New Orleans steamer, blew ashore twenty miles east of Pensacola bar in a fifty mile per hour gale. Tugs and life-saving crews race to reach the vessel and rescue its crew, with rough seas hindering recovery efforts. The ship is laden with oranges and fruit and fuel at Pensacola for its voyage. No confirmation yet on floated status.

Dynamite Found Hidden in Coal Aboard Thomas

Special to The Washington Post from Seattle January 3. Lewis E. Davis of Vancouver reports two sticks of dynamite were discovered in the coal on the transport Thomas during its last trip to the United States. About 2000 miles from Nagasaki the discovery caused panic among passengers as officers hinted Japanese stevedores might have planted the explosive amid tensions over a peace treaty. The Thomas carried 1500 soldiers of the Seventeenth Infantry and 400 other passengers, with four thousand tons of coal loaded at Nagasaki where the dynamite was concealed.

Three Accused Of Murder In Wilmington Vermont
