Six days in open boat after sinking steamer Nokomis

Captain Borden and six crewmen spent six days adrift in an open yawl after the Nokomis sank in a Gulfport voyage to Cuba. With only one gallon of water and a few cans of meat they fought waves and exposure, washing ashore near St Andrews in an almost unconscious state before being brought to Pensacola.

Tornado Flattens Schoolhouse Near Troy Alabama

A tornado struck the Josie Beatty schoolhouse at Troy Alabama on January 4 killing two boys ages eleven and twelve and injuring several others. The roof collapsed trapping occupants while Ramah Church and local homes were damaged. A second tornado passage over Jacksonville Texas caused injuries to five in a house and damaged seven other residences.

Puebla Towed Into Port After Storm Damage

The Pacific Steamship Company's steamer City of Puebla was towed into San Francisco harbor by the Chehalis and Norwood after a severe storm tore its propeller shaft off near the Columbia River mouth. Over 200 aboard were unharmed, with damage expected under $40,000. A Detroit traveling salesman, J M Carnall, was found dead in his Wayne Hotel room, an empty carbolic acid bottle nearby, ruled a suicide.

Fatal Explosion Injures Eight Miners in Hazleton Shaft

Eight miners were burned in a Peculiar accident at the Hazleton shaft of the Lehigh Valley Coal Company. Two died from injuries. Two men were carrying powder along the gangway when a keg exploded after contacting an overhead trolley wire powering electric motors. The injured were en route to work.

Tried murder and suicide at home ends in death

John McKay a lumber inspector died from a self inflicted bullet after failing to shoot his divorced wife at her home. His daughter Minnie helped wrest a revolver but a second gun was used on himself. In Philadelphia Elsie Tinsdale stabbed Bella Accoe on a crowded street over an overcoat. The murderer was captured nearby dressed as a man.

Detectives Guard New Haven Bridge Under Threat

Stamford Connecticut June 4 Fifteen detectives guard the New York New Haven and Hartford four track rolling lift bridge between Cos Cob and Riverside as officials fear a blow up plot. Eleven men from the railroad and seven from the American Bridge Company are watching for strikers believed to back a reported attack on the 6000 ton steel structure. An American Bridge Company gang former union men joined July 28 on an unsympathetic strike and thirty strike breakers appeared with reports of three blow ups heard at the bridge.
